Three thousand four hundred and fifty three people died from AR-15 fire in 2015.

Oh, no, wait... That's swimming pool drowning deaths.

The number of people killed by rifle fire is about 200 on an average year. That's about 3% of the total number of gun deaths.

Most gun deaths are due to handguns. More people are killed on an average Chicago weekend by handguns than are killed all year by rifles of all kinds, much less AR-15s.

Why is the focus on AR-15s? It's stupid. You don't see any gang bangers carrying AR-15s. People don't shoot themselves with AR-15s.

Banning AR-15s will do almost nothing aside from hurting law abiding owners.

We should focus gun control on handguns.

We should focus gun control on handguns.

If you can make that work as advertised in places like Chicago and Detroit, let me know.

Needs to be federal

Heller pretty much said "NO".

But, I am open minded.....we get the feds to pass a 2 strike law for firearms offenders that places them in prison for a minimum 20 year stint, and I might be willing to listen to what people have to say about gun control.

About 50% of mass murders have hand guns as the primary weapon. 100% of the mass murders involve humans. It makes sense to go after the 50%.

It will actually do something very important. It will set a precedent for banning all other firearms as the opposition to the ban wends its way through the courts. That's why they want to do it.

The banners see this opportunity as a way to use public sentiment to sway the courts to uphold a ban that is patently unconstitutional and once that ban is upheld they will use those decision to ban private ownership of all firearms.

All gun laws apply to people

False. That is not what Heller said. Lots of gun control is constitutional

At the very least, citizens should be able to legally own any weaponry available to local police departments, up to and including armored vehicles.

All those cops are trained and heavily background checked and their guns are registered.

Do the same and fine with me

You can already purchase armored vehicles and tanks.

Getting ammunition for the main gun systems is another story.

I think our gun control debates are missing the larger picture. Here's why this matters:

Small, armed groups of lightly trained neighborhood gangs can terrorize an entire population if that population cannot match firepower at the local level. Keep in mind, private gun ownership was banned in 2012 in Venezuela. The point of an armed citizenry is not to mount revolution -- it's to prevent the need to.

Then get a gun

Get trained

Fill out the paperwork

Also, gun control is one of the primary feeders of the prison industrial complex. Gun specifications, possession under disability, etc. contribute to our off-the-charts incarceration rates and high recidivism. We lock people up; release them back to violent, heavily armed neighborhoods, then toss them back in jail if they attempt to protect themselves.

I see no evidence of this

Part of what makes having an armed population effective at deterrence is that would-be strongmen don't know who is armed or what guns they have. A registry would just lead to more law-abiding Americans having their rights stripped.

Not a single law abiding person couldn't have a gun due to registration

I don’t see any issues with registration of any firearm that is owned by a city or state and is issued to a civilian like they are for law enforcement. No privately owned firearm should ever be registered.

I see no evidence of this

Here you go.

Key points:

• Arrest rates for firearms possession have doubled since 1965
• Arrest rates are 5 times greater for blacks than whites (does this mean gun control is racist? :0)
• Gun ownership rates are much higher in rural areas than urban areas, yet almost all gun possession arrests occur in urban and suburban communities.

To put this simply -- every time you pass new criminal laws, you create a new class of criminals. We need to take these things seriously. "We need to do something" is not good enough.

Self-reinforcing statement. If you change the law to criminalize possession of things I already have in my home, you change what is or isn't "law-abiding." The idea that laws are inherently good is flawed thinking.
