I am curious: i have had many people claim that people are "born gay". I have had others say that environment shapes-if not determines that "choice" . I don't know what the answer is. A very close friend was the victim of abuse and while not perhaps violent rape, -certainly coerced as a 14 or 15 year old. For 12 or so years she was "confused" dating men, then ultimately marrying a woman. Her sister was married to a late friend of mine-a psychologist who I had known since age five and who my son saw for some minor issues as a HS student. He was convinced that his sister in law's ultimate choice of a partner was at least partially caused by the very traumatic incidents as a teenager.

Another close friend of mine-who had a child at age 18, came out many years later. I have known her 20 years (she is about 50 now) and I am unaware of any relations she has been in while I have known her. She noted that the older she was, the more she was attracted to other women. She denies any sort of trauma.

I don't believe it's a choice. If it had been I would have chosen to be straight, much less hassle. I tried the straight life, it did not work out for me, or my ex wife.

I am 61. in 1975-76 two guys in my small HS class were alleged to be gay. Both I got along with very well. I never asked them. I thought it was inappropriate. One, many years later, died of AIDS. The other one, and his husband, bought a condo from one of my colleagues. I don't recall anyone in my class being hostile or negative towards them. I certainly wasn't. In grad school, there was a dorm I lived in one year-one of the suitemates-a German guy was gay. First day he told me. I said I have no issue with that-and i Didn't, but he said he wanted to be upfront with it. I never heard anyone say anything negative about him-but this was the Ivy league-albeit the mid 80s.
