The price of gas depends on ???

Ah my friend, I never was one to back down when proven wrong in a debate, or discussion.

You have proven me wrong I turn over my king to you , for indeed I was wrong.
I make no excuses just I was wrong.eace

No, you were not entirely wrong my friend, McCain has flip flopped back and forth much on environmental protection its hard to figure out where he's actually at.

Speaking for myself as an older person, I apologise for leaving the next generation this crap.

I grew up in the 60's I was with the people and College students who wanted change we got it but we didn't keep it.

Didn't get to keep it?

Civil rights are still here. Racism is maybe 1/10 of what it was before the protests and marches of the '60s, and is now something to hide under the rug, and not bring out in full display. We finally did get out of Vietnam. It took a while, but we're still out and Vietnam is peaceful and non Communist.

Each decade since has brought its own challenges, but we should be proud of the accomplishments of the '60s. Society is much different than it was in 1960.

My opoligies sir, no disrespect intended.

Your post seems like that of a young College student.

I too watched Ike's speech as well as Kennedy's which is what got me interested in politics in the first place.
"The toarch has been passed" to me it meant time to step up.
Although I agree that the right wing party has done it's damage but the real culprit here is GREED plain ansd simple.

Greed crosses all class lines all color lines and all political lines.
GREED is the main reason when we ask for something new in technology , corporations make a new cell phone.
GREED is the reason why alternitive fuel has remained on the back burner for 35 years
GREED IS WHAT DIVIDES AMERICA
GREED IS WHY AMERICA REMAINS DEPENDANT ON OTHERS FOR THE PROGRESS OF AMERICA.

TO WANT BETTER IS ONE THING, TO WANT ALL IS GREED.eace

A lot of young people throughout history from generation to generation did change.
Starting with some young people in a place called 13 colonies in 1776
Until the present day.
Young people coming up through the generations brought more than a few changes to how things were done in America.

I'm sure some said the following statements
England has always ruled the 13 colonies it will never change
America will always have slaves it will never change
Child labor will always be the norm it will never change
Segregation is the norm in America it will never change
NEED I GO ON???eace

Why do you people keep saying I'm young and I'm probably older than both of you? You would have to graduate in '67 to come close.

Frankly I wouldn't mind being called young. loleace

No, you were not entirely wrong my friend, McCain has flip flopped back and forth much on environmental protection its hard to figure out where he's actually at.

Well on that point , you get no debate from this poster. loleace

Ahthough the 60's brought a lot of changes.

Changes started befor that, back before the 60's child labor laws were hard fought as was womens rights as well as employees rights, the Coal miners strike because the mines were unsafe.
Windfall taxes were introduced to keep competition between corporations strong
McCarthism communist blacklisting were proven unfair
These changes happened because actors and people got tired of being pushed they started to push back.eace

Long chain - did anyone already cover the value of the dollar? For example, in regard to a world commodity, when the US dollar is weak (compared to what it was and compared to other currency) the price of gas goes up substantially in the US.

I'm perfect happy with my explaination that adding layers of costs that do not add value is inefficient. It's pretty basic economics. I showed where it would put another manufacturer out of business if not for the fact that oil has no (of much account) competition.

Lots of things are all marketed the same way. This is not the definition of a monopoly.

By the way, there are lots of "exemptions." OPEC sells us less than half of our foreign oil.

Sure, and the rest is still sold the same way. Even the oil we produce is sold this way.

It wasn't conservatives that had to change what they call themselves.

Right, what's the point of preparing for a crisis before it arrives???

I've stated over and over that I support further development of alternative energies.

Indeed. The government is also doing nearly everything they can do to make sure the dollar is weak. It's too bad for them that other countries have a huge head start on them there.

Yup - you righties are much better at demonizing the opposition that we are.

What I replied to was an attempt to do just that. I'm not sure how valid an arguement that both sides attempt something but only one side has had it make a difference is.

You didn't show that. In fact, my contention about the toaster maker not caring where it gets sold was uncontested. In fact, making an appeal to division of labor, the toaster maker selling to a distributor is in fact probably a more efficient solution!

That is not a monopoly!

It was and you did not address it. It is too bad that you would rather discuss things like this as opposed to actually addressing what has been said.

Then why did you cut off the first part of my quote in my last post and not respond to it?

Yes, we did, and a darned good thing, too. McCarthyism. I'd forgotten about that abuse of liberty. Good riddance.

Because if you are going to accuse me of not responding to you even though I clearly did, there is no use in further discussion.

You didn't adequately respond to the criticism as you seem to think you have. Besides, I presented you with a different argument now. I'm imploring you not to let pride get in the way. Pride has no place in an academic discussion.

Then address what I said and why I was wrong. Don't tell me I didn't address it.

Sorry, we haven't addressed the first one yet. Or rather, you haven't.

McCarthy got his in '54.

I told you what was wrong with it. The toaster maker doesn't care who he sells to, and the distributor is better at marketing than the toaster maker is.

And I noted where you were wrong and explained that maker A is perfectly capable of selling his toaster directly to Wal-Mart and even in this situation there is only one extra hand involved, not 7-8.

Toaster maker A makes a toaster and sells to Wal-Mart. Toaster maker B makes a toaster, sells it to a distributor who then sells it to Wal-Mart. Never mind that Wal-Mark isn't even going to bother buying toaster maker B's toaster because of the middle mans cost.

Add 6 more hands and where is toaster maker B?

That does not appear to be a big factor at this time as inflation is at historic lows.
