I'm bored. I'm jaded, cynical, disconnected, uninspired .. and bored.

And, I want your help.

I've enjoyed political discussion in the past .. and thought maybe I still would enjoy it here .. but, it's just not happening.

I think I've come to a place where talk is simply not enough for me -- I want to act!

I want to find a cause, join a movement, majorly participate in something huge, profound, courageous, imaginative, and inspiring, something that truly wants to make a difference in making things better for so very many Americans, maybe even for others in the world as a byproduct.

I want to be an active part of something to which I can truly relate, yes, but I also want to be a part of something greater than myself.

I just don't know what that is.

I know what it isn't -- that's easy for me to discern.

But what it is?

Well, I would probably know it when I see it.

It would be something that addresses the dismal descending state of joblessness in America, it would accurately reveal the more foundational cause of our problems, it would address solving related problems and righting ethical wrongs, it would create maybe a new political philosophy and bring new people to Washington to effect that philosophy into America's socio-economic and geopolitical systems, it would work to prevent the otherwise inevitable double-dip and likely depression ... .

This cause would be effectively organized in a structure that stays true to its foundational theme and doesn't get lost or rendered ineffective by taking on a bunch of truly irrelevant messages.

It wouldn't merely be a media whore, instead initially eschewing media attention in deference to building a strong base of people acting on its cause, until the mere size of it can't help but be noticed by all.

It would appeal to a great majority of Americans.

It would be well presented at every stage of its development.

It may be just beginning, or well on its way.

This is what I'm looking for, not just to talk about, but of which to be a real active part.

But .. I don't know what that is.

I've searched the internet .. talked with people .. I just can't seem to find what I'm looking for, if it even exists at all.

Which brings me to the point of this thread: please, would you help me find what I'm looking for here?

I'd really appreciate some help searching for the perfect cause for me, a movement I could really believe in.

I guess I'm asking for you to help me on a kind of scavenger hunt .. to search the internet, refer to your previously found links, talk with others .. to see if you can find out there somewhere something that comes close to what I've described.

Then post something about it, a link or whatever, for me to review and comment.

If you could do that to help me here, that would be really great.

As my user name implies, I'm foundationally an ontologist -- I must find meaning in life, which also comes from being truly connected to that which touches the core of my "I am" experience.

Without that, I'm .. well, I'm the first line in this post .. and that's a miserably angsty place for an ontologist .. to be.

Anyway .. that's what this thread is about.

I really appreciate you taking the time to read this .. and I'm grateful for whatever help you can provide.

Maybe I'm not the only one here who experiences what I've just described -- maybe there's others of you here who can relate.

Regardless, I thank you so much for whatever help you can provide.

easy answer: start a business

now comes the hard part: actually doing it

Perhaps I understand your point.

It is easy to lose one's self in a cause, to get swept away into something .. that may not be what one really sought.

I think for those to whom that happens, it was more easy to lose themselves because their sense of self was externally defined.

As I requested in the OP, I need something that fits with who I already truly am .. and by "something greater than myself" I mean offering who I am and what I can to be a part of larger and more effective whole that thereby has a greater chance of accomplishing what I myself desire.

I very much feel the same way.

The last 4 years I alieviated that feeling by trying trying to make my son's school a better place. I know it probably sounds trivial and stupid, but it was a task that was accomplishable. I think I had some success. Now he has graduated and is away at college, so I no longer have the motivation to continue doing so, aside from occasionally giving advice and counciling those who are following in my footsteps.

Anyhow, I would love to find a candidate who I could really rally behind and support and promote, but for the life of me I can't find any. I've even considered running for something, but I am a terrible public speaker and I just might have some skeletons in my closet that I would prefer not to be made public.

I'm board as hell with my business (which is why I spend way to much time on DP), or maybe burned out with my business, after 20+ years of it. During the past 20 years I have pursued a dozen or more different mini-businesses, most failed, a few still contribute to my income, but at this time I am just a little discouraged from trying for that "next great business idea". I almost feel like at this point I am just counting down my years til retirement, at which time I will simply be counting down the days until death.

It's quite depressing.

Maybe if I could stay off the internet for a while I could let what little enthusiasm and energy build up, until I feel motivated to start doing something with my life. Like you, finding that special cause.

So - what's stopping you? You don't need anonymous people on a forum to send you off in a direction with a motto in your hand.

If you want to get involved more heavily in politics then volunteer for a candidate you support, petition for something you feel is worthy of your time and effort, nose around your town - get to know your mayor and other political figures. You're a citizen - there's nothing that's not yours to stick your nose in.

Just don't go all Felix Unger on everyone and you'll be fine :)

Concentrate on your sphere of influence and move out from there. Help those in your circle before you try to save the world. Then those in your church...your town....volunteer in a food pantry...pet shelter...homeless shelter...too mundane? Those are the real things that make the world a better place.

I very much feel the same way.
I appreciate you saying that .. I was beginning to think I was the only one.

I think that's great.

We often get to a point where we realize we have something to give back, something that we learned, and when we get a chance, when we see something out there where we can make a difference ..

.. You got a chance to do that, and you did.

Mine are done with school now, too.

And I'm wondering what's next.

Anyhow, I would love to find a candidate who I could really rally behind and support and promote, but for the life of me I can't find any.
Oh, and a big "Amen" to that, brother! If there's anyone out there I could support, they're hiding really well.

I personally am not candidate oriented; I'm more policy and message oriented.

But it would be great to find a candidate who's on point with that of the OP I'm looking for.

I'd vote for 'em, but I'd really put much of my effort into "party philosophy", searching for good candidates who'd stay on point with it.

I've even considered running for something, but I am a terrible public speaker and I just might have some skeletons in my closet that I would prefer not to be made public.
Sometimes I think there are a great many people who'd make good public servants, yet they could never get to first base in the race because some skeleton would be revealed by the media, thanks to the opposition.

But show me someone who doesn't have a skeleton or two in their closet, and I'll show you someone who's yet to fully experience life, someone who may not really be ready to represent "the people" as they truly are.

I too am a small business owner .. and sometimes I'm here when I've caught up on things as well.

And for me, business is down because of the very things we need to correct here in America.

For me, I'm motivated to do something politically; starting a new business or something just wouldn't float my boat right now.

I almost feel like at this point I am just counting down my years til retirement, at which time I will simply be counting down the days until death. It's quite depressing.
Okay, now you're preaching to the choir.

I'm right there with you.

There's got to be something more to life .. than just waiting to die.

I may not be as "productive" as when I was young, but we middle-agers still have a lot to offer this country.

Maybe if I could stay off the internet for a while I could let what little enthusiasm and energy build up, until I feel motivated to start doing something with my life. Like you, finding that special cause.
Yeah, if I vent all my frustrations in words, it kind of saps my energy to actually go out there and do something.

Then again, I've yet to find that special cause.

Maybe I've been looking for cause in all the wrong places .. but I've yet to find the one I'm dreaming of.

Concentrate on your sphere of influence and move out from there.
I like that -- the old "think globally and act locally".

I've been looking ...

Help those in your circle before you try to save the world. Then those in your church...your town....volunteer in a food pantry...pet shelter...homeless shelter?
I think the guardians in this world who do that are truly great.

They're kind of like triage, and they help hold things together until ..

.. The things they help deal with are no longer problems.

Though I'm honestly not bent that way, I too have done some of these things in the past, and it can be rewarding .. but that's just not meaningful to me right now.

...too mundane?
But, yeah, I'm looking for something else, something more meaningful that does indeed speak to solving the causative problems we all face.

That's how I'm bent.

Those are the real things that make the world a better place.
Yes, they most certainly do.

There are other real things that also help make the world a better place, and it's these other more political policy-message idea things and the movement to implement them that are meaningful to me.

If you want to do something to help others, I would say find a way to mentor those who are younger than you.

If you want to do something to help others in regards to joblessness, I would say find a way to mentor those who are younger than you by telling them what they can expect when it comes to jobs.

You are not going to change the world in big ways. But you know what? That's okay.

Rather, you can change the world in small ways. Just help one other person. That way, you may not change the world, but you will change that person's world.

I've considered going to local political party meetings. All parties. I just figured if I went to enough of 'em, over a long enough period of time, that I could find an opportunity in one of them to make a difference. I still might do that.

So - what's stopping you? You don't need anonymous people on a forum to send you off in a direction with a motto in your hand.
Actually I was thinking that I do need some help finding the movement I seek.

Maybe it's out there as I described in the OP and I just haven't found it and someone here has and can point me in that direction.

Or maybe people here are better at finding things on Google than I am.

If you want to get involved more heavily in politics then volunteer for a candidate you support,
Still looking ...

But I'm not candidate oriented -- I'm philosophy-policy-message oriented.

petition for something you feel is worthy of your time and effort, nose around your town - get to know your mayor and other political figures. You're a citizen - there's nothing that's not yours to stick your nose in.
Yeah, but so far I haven't found anything around here to stick my nose in that I want to stick my nose in.

Besides, considering the nature of the local powers that be, my nose can take only so much.

Just don't go all Felix Unger on everyone and you'll be fine :)
Hey, everyone has an odd couple of days now and then when they feel they should clean something up. ;)

If you want to do something to help others, I would say find a way to mentor those who are younger than you.
That's always good to do.

I'm doing some of that now .. but it's not enough to really do it for me.

And some have asked me some very tough and pointed questions about how things are right now .. and I just don't have a good hopeful answer for them.

I end up later thinking to myself that they deserve better.

If you want to do something to help others in regards to joblessness, I would say find a way to mentor those who are younger than you by telling them what they can expect when it comes to jobs.
I've actually found that most already know what to expect .. and they're not happy about their real expectations.

You are not going to change the world in big ways. But you know what? That's okay.
For me, it's not about changing the world in big ways, it's about the process of doing what's meaningful for me, no matter what.

I'm less focused on being hugely successful on a global scale than that I can be some meaningful part of something that gets to the heart of the matter.

I believe that the right cause will take care of its own success and on its own scale.

Rather, you can change the world in small ways. Just help one other person. That way, you may not change the world, but you will change that person's world.
As strange as this may sound, the cause I seek is really more about letting me be effective at being me.

Should I find that cause, I will be the person whose world is changed.

When I am being the best me I can be, doing that which is mine to do, those around me will benefit as a byproduct.

I believe that's true for most.

I've considered going to local political party meetings. All parties. I just figured if I went to enough of 'em, over a long enough period of time, that I could find an opportunity in one of them to make a difference. I still might do that.
I think that's a great idea.

A number of years ago I pawed through an encyclopedia of organizations at the library. It was fun, and I learned a lot.

I was looking for political organizations, and for the same reason you mention here.

Later I did the same thing on the internet.

I wish I could say I was completely happy with what I found where I lived.

Now I'm not so much looking for a pre-existing party, but maybe a more message-focused movement, or maybe a more centristly oriented new party beginning to form where the message is relevant to our times.

I don't have an administrative bone in my body, so I really need those who do to be the organizers.

I'm better at realizing what needs to be done and championing it.

I'm not bored, jaded, cynical, disconnected, or uninspired, but I remember once feeling some of those things. My answer then was, study a foreign country, go live there, and become fluent in the language and in that way get reborn. It was pretty effective. But for someone older, the easiest way is to help others and start small. Look around, not on the web, but where you actually live, and see what sorts of unfilled needs there are that you could actually fill, what unempowered people there are whom you could actually empower. It should not be "ontological," especially for an "ontologist." It should be immediate practical help. When you help others in that way, you forget all about yourself and fulfilling yourself, but paradoxically, it does fulfill you. It also leads to other situations where you can be helpful in ways closer to your potential.

Think of Jimmy Carter, someone many people thought was a failure as a president. But since he left office, he and his wife have been building houses for Habitat for Humanity for decades, and even though they are really old, Carter still hammers in nails himself, gets his hands dirty with actual honest work. His work has not only helped many people too poor to buy or build homes or people whose homes were destroyed, but has served as a great vehicle for informal diplomacy all over the world - it made us look good everywhere to counteract how bad we looked for thousands of political reasons. It was non-partisan, constructive, and made a practical difference everywhere he did it.

Alternatively, how about Buddy Roehmer, the man running for president as an independent without a superpak whose major issue is getting big money out of politics and elections in order to clean up the whole political system and restore representativeness of the voters in representational democracy. He may be eccentric, but he is right because that one change would make everything better for voters no matter what political position they took save that of financially corrupt cronyism.

All good suggestions and examples.

For the most part, though, been there, done that, and though personally fulfilling, after a time I came to realize and eventually stop denying that I was merely plugging my finger in the dike.

In the short time I have left, I want to do more than that.

No one knows how long he/she has got. Get out of cynicism - it's not good for people. Don't worry. Be happy.:)
