I'm just going to simply say that judging men of history by contemporary standards is obviously an absurd way of adjudicating history.

You're simply trying to excuse the lies behind many American statements of "freedom", "equality" etc by your founders. It's patently obvious they meant much of what they wrote for a select white fraternity only.

Now I agree that we can say that many things in history were unfortunate and they're certainly things we have moved beyond. I think it's fantastic that we've moved beyond the laws of the jungle - which still exist in much of the global south - and we should continue to proselytize our values to the global audience.

I've experienced American values being pushed on countries in the Global South - from supporting or even helping instal brutal dictators like Mobutu Sese Seko to my living alongside and drinking with American Evangelist missionaries in the Sudan mission in Northern Nigeria to understand what they were about and why. Your values are fake and only apply to all American citizens when it suits American geopolitical purposes.
American founders didn't mean it when they wrote the constitution and they don't mean it now when trying to install US friendly governments in Africa and elsewhere.
Currently, your govt continues to stand resolutely behind Israel, a country deeply involved in a slow and deliberate ethnic cleansing of the West Bank and allowing your ally to starve women and children in Gaza.

This is the kind of prosletyising of American values going on right now in Gaza - American ex-servicemen with easily searchable histories of anti-muslim sentiment hired as the security at sites in Gaza where innocents have been shot and kileld in cold blood.

My strong suspicion is many of these men have gone because they get to shoot unarmed muslims and not face any consequence for it.

It's the Nationalist Christian fundies in the USA basically; many years ago - I believe it was Panorama or maybe just Louis Theroux but it was a BBC tour around several US groups that sent huge amounts of funds every year and have huge pressure on US governments because these fundies have the belief that Israel was the lesser evil of keeping that part of the Middle East clear as it would be Jesus' "landing strip" for his second coming.
They could live with the fact that Jews apparently rejected and killed him the first time around because this time around he was coming for all the good white people and to take them to heaven.
