The Russian-occupied islands Japan wants back

Four islands off the chilly northern coast of Japan were seized by Russia at the end of the World War II. Local fisherman still risk capture and death every day.

It's very important the right imperialist power holds those islands. Japan spend a lot of time committing genocide to get them, and it's not fair for Russia to just take them away.

Why? Why is Japanese imperialism better than Russian imperialism? Why not give the islands back to the indigenous Ainu, or promote self-governance by the current population? Would you support ethnically cleansing the non-Japanese population to ensure Japanese rule?

And? Doesn't change that the Ainu to whom the islands belong were ethnically cleansed by Japan, and that the people living there are mostly not Japanese. Japan has no greater claim to the islands than Russia.

Dmitry Medvedev responded to the Japanese prime minister's call for more negotiations and a peace treaty with Russia. He then stated that the territorial issue has been "permanently resolved" due to Russia's 2020 constitutional amendment that prohibited the cession of territory, and he joked, "A particularly sad samurai should commit seppuku.'' Japan can never recover the Kurils or Manchuria as these former territories are lost forever by losing the war. Close to 70% of Japanese citizens strongly oppose the far-right movement to demand the return of the Kurils.
