Trump said today during the Norwegian Ambassador that Ukraine should not expect to keep Crimea.

Sitting alongside Norway’s prime minister, Trump insisted that Russia is serious about peace despite its overnight bombardment of Ukraine’s capital, which he said he “didn’t like.” But when asked what concessions he was demanding of Putin, the president responded matter-of-factly:

“Stopping the war,” Trump said. “Stopping taking the whole country — pretty big concession.”

After three plus years of fighting, the Ukrainians are not even remotely close to retaking Crimea. All those fancy Western wunderwaffe have produced nothing but a bloody stalemate, and the Ukrainians are struggling to keep their own troops in the field.

I get the West is terrible at negotiations because it’s so used to simply issuing ultimatums and invading when those get rejected, but Ukraine ceding Crimea is hardly a big loss at this point.

It's a done deal. the population is majority Russia, the lingua franca is Russian. It's historically Russian

If Z had a brain he'd use Crimean recognition as a negotiating tool, and get something in return for recognition. He's not getting it back

He is. You miss a lot if you just get Russian news.

Might makes right.

Other countries take note.

He "didn't like" the strike on Kyiv?

He sounds very....indifferent about it. I bet he'd have a shit fit if Ukraine gave Moscow a good blowing up with drones.

Majority Russian...because the ethnic Crimeans have either been shipped out, scared out or murdered.

Trump is the most evil president this country has ever seen.

Good job Christians

Gee, how many Americans were tried at The Hague for all those war crimes committed in Iraq again?

None?

Hmm.

Looks like “might makes right” has been the official American policy for a long time.

The Russian economy is so bad that if Trump works with Europe to support Ukraine, Russia will have to withdraw.

The last three years show that to be an outright falsehood. The Biden admin’s sanctions didn’t force Russia to withdraw, despite claims they would cause a collapse in “weeks” or whatever.

But Trump is such a strong man he can say "Vladimir get out of Ukraine or I will kick your ass out".

Given the US lacks the ability to “kick the Russians out” in the first place, such a threat would be meaningless.

Crimea has always been majority Russian going back as far as Tsarist Russia

What do you mean majority Russian? If they were citizens of Ukraine they were Ukrainian. You are confusing ethnicity with citizenship.

He always (conveniently) does that.

Crimea has always been majority "ethnic" Russian going back as far as Tsarist Russia

Fixed that for ya.

Stalin deported 423,000 Crimean Tatars in 1944.

And yet they aren’t even remotely close to being the majority of the populace in Crimea.
Not any more.
The Russian Empire deliberately created unbearable living conditions for the Crimean Tatars, culminating in their mass emigration and eventual deportation in 1944. The consequences of this crime persist to this day. Depriving an indigenous people of their homeland is not merely a matter of physically relocating them — it is an act of violence that profoundly disrupts their lives and destinies.

The Russian Empire was long gone by 1944.

The US treated Native Americans the exact same way. Does that mean the western United States in particular aren’t truly part of America?

This all started again when Russia occupied Crimea in 2014. There were mass arrests, murders, and disappearances. Many are still imprisoned. This is all well documented.

There has been strong secessionist sentiment in Crimea dating back to the early 1990s. There was no significant resistance to the actual Russian takeover, and minimal of any sort since then. This is all well documented.

Nor, for that matter, does the West have an actual issue with “mass arrests, murders, and disappearances.” Countries that carried out such policies have been, and still are, referred to as part of the “free world”.
