“I’ll tell you what’s at the bottom of it,” he said. “If you can convince the lowest white man he’s better than the best colored man, he won’t notice you’re picking his pocket. Hell, give him somebody to look down on, and he’ll empty his pockets for you.”
--LBJ, speaking privately to his young press secretary (and future legendary biographer and PBS host, Bill Moyer) on the campaign trail in rural Tennessee, during the 1960 presidential campaign, in response to the prevalence of signage featuring vulgar and incendiary racial epithets at his rallies.

As a lifelong conservative Southern Democrat, turned progressive, LBJ understood the mentality of white conservatives. It's the political philosophy that was developed by former Strom Thurmond and Nixon strategist Harry Dent.

To put it all in proper historical context, one must understand that Dent's protégé' during the Nixon years, Kevin Phillips, would go on the be Nixon's chief strategist. Phillips' protégé during the Nixon years (i.e. Lee Atwater) would go on to be Bush, Sr's campaign manager. And Atwater's protégé (i.e. Karl Rove) would go on to be the campaign manager and chief strategist for the W. Bush administration.

Donald Trump's rise, and the entire "MAGA Movement", were built upon exploitation of the "Lowest White Man" principle. And, even in defeat, 48% of the country supported it.

And yet, the TRUTH is that poor and middle class whites AND non-whites actually share the SAME economic needs and interests...and enemies. Democrats understand this. African-Americans understand this. But white conservatives have been duped into voting against their best interests, by the "Boogieman" of Race. LBJ stated it accurately (and best) 60 years ago, but I don't believe many of us believed his words would still ring so true in 2020 America.

So again, it's no secret how and why white middle class (and below) white conservatives consistently vote against their own interests. Racial resentment and fear is the virus that continues to infect America. It's the virus that the wealthy exploit, shamelessly, to maintain power. And it's the virus that prevents America from being living up to its founding ideals. And it's the virus that will (unless confronted and neutralized) will lead to America's downfall as a liberal democracy.

Now, with Trump's defeat and demise...and with Trump's legacy as a failed, one-term, corrupt president ensured....there is, at least, some hope for redemption. But only if liberals, progressives and Never Trumpers grasp the reality that the so-called "Battle for the soul of America" does not end with Trump's defeat at the hands of Biden. After 4 disgraceful, shameful, demoralizing and embarrassing years of Trump's America, if decent Americans do not FINALLY understand (and embrace) the reality that bigots, racists and low-information "deplorables" can only be defeated (and not reformed or reasoned with), America will become the Roman Empire. The fall of the Roman Empire begin in 395 AD, and the empire was complete by about 476 AD (i.e. only 80 years).

It's time for Democrats and Never Trumpers to take on, and discredit, the "Lowest White Man" issue. The way to do that is NOT by attacking Trumpers, but by taking on the REAL forces behind the exploitation of poor/middle class white Americans and small businesses (and every other major demographic group, as well): Corporate America and a few hundred "ultra-wealthy" families in our society. There need to be a binary choice between unfettered Capitalism, and "Socialism". For 2 generations (and counting) weak-minded Democrats have failed in that public debate, during which time, the Republicans have LITERALLY sold their souls to (i.e. been bought off by) those very interests (i.e. Corporate America and the ultra-wealthy). It's time to do better.

America, this is our second chance. Wake up, and don't waste it!

LBJ said it. Johnson wasn't a socialist, but he did understand the mentality of bigots

LBJ said it. Johnson wasn't a socialist

I was responding to the OP quote: " There need to be a binary choice between unfettered Capitalism, and "Socialism".

Unfettered capitalism is either fascism or anarcho-capitalism that would crash the economy within 45 days and take the lives of thousands of people with it because capitalism is predatory. Do you support either idea?

1) Where exactly did you get the 45 days timeline ?

2) Old Adolph used socialism as a tool to bring upon fascism.

3) I support a free market with little government interference. The markets will take care of themselves. Even the status quo is acceptable. I don't want to live in a system where one individual, either Bernie or Trump type telling me how to run my affairs.

That was a very inopportune TYPO on my part, there.

I meant to say "there need NOT be a binary choice between unfettered Capitalism and Socialism".

Thanks for pointing it out.

And since neither I, nor ANY major political leader in this country is advocating for a Socialist economy....not even Bernie Sanders....your opinion piece seems a bit irrelevant.

Yeah thanks for clarifying, I came off a bit confused.

Yeah, that was a really bad one. Kinda clouds the whole message of my OP.

Too late for me to edit it, unfortunately.

Hopefully, others will see my correction.

2) Old Adolph used socialism as a tool to bring upon fascism.

And old Donald has used the guise of "capitalism" as a tool to bring us closer to fascism than this country has ever seen.

Old Adolph never practiced a day of Socialism, btw. It was just the popular, populist movement of the day, at a time when the world was rebelling against centuries of imperialism and "royal" family rule. Autocrats come in all shades. They use Socialism/Communism as a "Trojan Horse" every bit as easily as they use Capitalism and Fascism. So this is a weak argument on your part.

Markets "take care of themselves" by crashing, too. There simply is no body of academic research (nor history) that supports the notion of unfettered free market economies. Every bit of history shows that they destroy the middle class. The ONLY reason a majority "Middle Class" population even exists is because WE (i.e. the U.S.) invented it via FDR's New Deal policies (along with the rise of the labor movement).

Well-regulated MIXED economies (i.e. Capitalist/Socialist) are clearly the best economic model.

I just so happen to be the lowest white man. I'm pretty sure that I'm beneath the lowest black man. Everyone has to be someone.

Yes, is irrelevant now because you corrected your error.

When "we" correct ourselves first there is less division and confusion in society.

The Democrats are going to **** it up, just like always.

Trump losing this election just might be a blessing in disguise.

Also hearsay... LBJ said that he's have those niggers voting democrat for 200 years.

People are growing tired of people like you, but your not equipped enough to see it, or understand it if you did.

The Democrats are going to **** it up, just like always.

The Democrats have a LOT of Trump's bullshit, corruption and incompetence to clean up first...fbefore than can even think about "f-ing" it up.

Trump losing this election just might be a blessing in disguise.
There's is no doubt about that. Biden could do nothing but sit on his thumbs for the next 4 years, and he'd STILL do less harm to the country than Trump has done.

Fortunately, Biden's going to do a lot more than that.

Yeah, they gotta kill all those jobs and get rid of the best economy in 50 years. They do have a lot of work to do.

Hitler was never a socialist. he hated socialists, communists, union leaders, and liberals, and they were among the first sent to the camps.

The free markets exist only to make a profit and then create more for the owners, which is predatory in a society. That is why we have business regulations to prevent that predation from happening.

How do you fear that Bernie would tell you how to run your affairs? What are you afraid of happening in a socialist democratic society?

Also hearsay... LBJ said that he's have those niggers voting democrat for 200 years.

I'm sure you enjoy any excuse to use that epithet....but in this case (as seemingly always) it is YOU who is guilty of promoting hearsay.

My remarks are a direct quote from LBJ's biographer. There is no proof that LBJ ever said that. That said...who cares if he did? What we DO know LBJ said about the impact of the Civil Rights Act of '64 is this (again, courtesy of legendary journalist Bill Moyers):

"Some years later when Johnson was president, there was a press conference in the East Room. A reporter unexpectedly asked the president how he could explain his sudden passion for civil rights when he had never shown much enthusiasm for the cause. The question hung in the air. I could almost hear his silent cursing of a press secretary who had not anticipated this one. But then he relaxed, and from an instinct no assistant could brief -- one seasoned in the double life from which he was delivered and hoped to deliver others -- he said in effect: Most of us don't have a second chance to correct the mistakes of our youth. I do and I am. That evening, sitting in the White House, discussing the question with friends and staff, he gestured broadly and said, "Eisenhower used to tell me that this place was a prison. I never felt freer."

I don't know about you, RUSN, but I'm a Christian. I believe a man who repents deserves grace and forgiveness. What about you?

Or, does your faith teach you that grace and forgiveness only applies for conservatives?

People are growing tired of people like you, but your not equipped enough to see it, or understand it if you did.

People are growing tired of people like me, huh? People like you, I presume?

Well, clearly you're (not "your") not "equipped" enough to understand that decent people don't care what people like you think or feel. You and I both know that people like you aren't going to do a damned thing about people like me, because people like you lack the "stones" for it. Either way, TRUST ME when I say that I'm not worried about WHATEVER people like you might do.

Yeah, they gotta kill all those jobs and get rid of the best economy in 50 years. They do have a lot of work to do.

Trump's economy wasn't even the "best economy" in 5 years, much less 50.

But I do get a kick out of seeing you Trump acolytes regurgitate the same old, tired, discredited talking points.

2021 is going to be an equally awful year...for the entire global economy. But with sensible, competent leadership, 2022 stands be MUCH better.

a) What was the tool that the german lunatic used to brainwash the masses ? What was the key to enter the mind of the german people ? Answer: SOCIALISM.

2) I don't want to live in a society where individuals that never produced or delivered a service, like Bernie have a say in policy on how the private industry should be run.

3) An acquaintance that did business in his state put it well: "Bernie is like Moses, tells the people to go forward in the sea but he does not go in first".

Hitler blamed the problem on Jews and the Treaty of Versailles that crippled Germany after the war.

Replies 2 and 3 are incoherent. Trump has never produced anything of value and yet you follow him like a puppy. he has g failed upwards all of his life because of his name and his father's money or influence. What has Mitch, Ms. Lindsey, or Dubya done with their life to produce anything? Bill Barr has been a lifelong legal scumbag, starting with the Nixon administration. Bernie Sanders has spent his life in public policy and has continually fought for the underdog. I respect that.

The last decent republican was Dwight Eisenhower who was a lifelong civil servant, stating at West Point, WW1, WW2, and then the POTUS. He is 10x the leader that the current GOP could ever be. The US government isn't to be run like a business because every time it has been tried tio crashed. The government is the opposite of a business and it is to provide a high-quality service for the people that supports the society in which it exists. Hopefully, that service can break even but the quality of the service is far more important than the cost. Libertarians still have yet to grasp this very basic concept of public service.

Bernie Sanders has spent his life in public life dividing groups & individuals and provided an outlet for personal failures to be blamed on the "system"

The political system is obviously broken and Donald Trump and the GOP are evidence of that disfunction. How has Bernie divided people by fighting for the rights of minorities and the economic stability of the middle class? I'm sure that the majority who seek to trample the rights of minorities, as well as the rich, don't like Bernie but you can't please everyone. Your religious beliefs are not a license to deny others the very same rights that you enjoy, nor is profit a right.

Not sure what you are talking about.

"the rich" "religious beliefs" "minorities?!"

Trotsky would have sent you to churches, synagogues and places of worship to tell them: Priest, Rabbi time to close down, we are living in a new enlightenment world.

It is so interesting to observe the dynamics of groups. Each side thinking they have the moral high ground.

Is that what you believe? Why would I do that?
