FULL TITLE: The FBI said it failed to act on a tip warning of the suspected Florida school shooter's potential for violence

The FBI said Friday that a month before the shooting rampage at a South Florida high school, the bureau received a warning that the 19-year-old charged in the massacre might carry out such an attack — but then investigators failed to act on it. The startling revelation came two days after police say Nikolas Cruz marched into his former high school and gunned down 17 people. In a statement, the FBI said it received a tip last month from “a person close to Nikolas Cruz” reporting concerns about him, specifically saying that he could potentially carry out a school shooting. While this should have been investigated “as a potential threat to life … these protocols were not followed,” the bureau said in a statement. “We are still investigating the facts,” Christopher A. Wray, the FBI director, said in the statement. “I am committed to getting to the bottom of what happened in this particular matter, as well as reviewing our processes for responding to information that we receive from the public.”

President Trump and others have tried to steer the aftermath of the Parkland shooting away from gun control measures, although some Democrats, along with teenagers who survived the attack, have pushed back against that. Some of the loudest voices pleading for more to be done are the children who were at Douglas and lived, who have been demanding to know why the adults running the country have not done more to help prevent similar tragedies. Others have been parents of those who survived or those who lost their lives. “President Trump, please do something!” Lori Alhadeff, whose daughter Alyssa was killed, said in emotional remarks broadcast on CNN. “Do something. Action! We need it now! These kids need safety now!”

FBI Director Christopher Wray says the FBI badly fumbled the ball on warnings about Nikolas Cruz.
 
And people still wonder why individuals choose to arm themselves.
 
Lack of resources will surely be found to have been the primary cause - after spending plenty more on a detailed internal investigation.
 
first the Air Force slacked in the Texas shooting & now the FBI slacked in the Florida shooting

third world stuff there IMO ...........
 
I predict that this joke of a president will yet again use this finding as a chance to flog the FBI in public. Considering that the FBI is one of our safeguards against acts of terrorism, that is about as unpresidential as it gets.

If there is a real problem here--and it looks like there is--the presidential thing to do is to have a closed-door meeting to sort out all the facts and to determine what could be done better in future cases such as that disturbed young man's. FFS even Bush Jr. understood this.

Both DoD and the FBI will likely get budget increases to "help fix those problems" - all is well in the DC swamp.

And I predict you are right.

And what is most annoying about that is it would only pertain to this one person anyway. What about the Las Vegas shooter? Or the Sandy Hook shooter? Or the Texas church shooter? This wouldn't pertain to any of them - yet there are a lot of dead people in those situations.

The FBI connection here is irrelevant to people who worry that when they send their kids off to school, the next time they see them will be in a body bag. Like, for instance, me.

I can get a pizza to my house faster than the cops.
The entire thing is the police are there just to clean up the mess
after the fact.

if you are not armed and you do not have anything to protect yourself then you are screwed.

It was reported to the FBI but they never let the local cops know about it.
THis really was a local matter but the FBI just dropped it into a black hole.

The local police should have investigated it further. More so they could have gone to the school
to find out if there were any issues.

They would have found that this kid had been kicked out etc ...

It's obviously President Trump's fault. After all he reportedly goes to Florida every weekend and plays 16 rounds of golf.

You would think he would have noticed a kid walking around with a back pack full of guns.

How is it that the trail to Nikolas Cruz grew cold for the FBI? Is this because YouTube refused to provide it with needed info? What?

If, as is the case here, a responsible citizen reports a scary post (YouTube, Instagram, Snapchat, FB, whatever) to the FBI again, that's going to be very relevant.

The YouTube comment was the first report, this is a second informant from someone close to the POS.

If Trump hasn't taken the FBI to task, he sure should, and no need to cower behind closed doors. 18 people, mostly children, are dead and everyone directly associated with dropping the ball on this one should be publicly reprimanded. Protecting the agents who did this helps no one, and secrecy only makes the public more leery of government. Let's get it out in the open so the next agent thinks twice before not following up on tip.

This president burnt his credibility when it comes to flogging the FBI in public long ago. He's the boy who cried wolf a thousand times when he saw nothing more than a stray dog.

A much smarter move would be to meet with them behind closed doors, sort out exactly what went wrong, and decide how to move forward in a way that keeps us safe without jeopardizing our rights. You know, like presidents used to do.

Your preemptive criticism is premature. You might want to wait for him to do something before you pretend it's the absolute worst possible thing he could of done.

I have to say I was disappointed with the Miami offices directors response. He offered no explination. He just said he regrets that they made a mistake. What mistake did they make? Where did the breakdown occur? Who is responsible? His answer was entirely too obtuse. Are they gonna hide behind national security again to avoid transparency and accountability?
