The British Empire.

What does Hiram Maxim have to do with "Black History"? LOL

He was an American inventor went to England, invented the machine gun. Who was the first person killed with a machine gun? The Battle of Matabele 1893 South Africa.

I think of history as Power Games.

Military Power Games
Political Power Games
Economic Power Games

Players in the form of Empires, Countries or Individuals come and go. Over the last 550 years Technology has been affecting the games. We have been watching what drones can do in Ukraine over the last 3 years.

But the steam engine catapulted Britain onto the global stage after 1800. The steam ship Nemesis blew the Chinese out of the water in the Opium Wars. Military Power from technology enforcing the Economic Power Game.

It was a Brit who came up with the idea for the Proximity Fuse for Artillery in WW2. But the US provided the economic and industrial power to solve the mass production issues to produce tens of thousands of shells to take out Japanese planes and German infantry at the Battle of the Bulge.

But history teachers ask crap like, What General said 'NUTS!' to the Germans?
.
.

Do they claim that the US somehow was complicit in those acts as you have rather than just selling them weapons?
The U.S. is absolutely complicit in the genocide in Gaza. Only an American apologist would deny that.

We agree on this.
There is internal criticism when the U.S. sells weapons to countries who are violating the Geneva conventions and/or commit human rights abuses. Same criticism for training, especially counter insurgency as was done at the School of the Americas for the Salvadoran military. The training center changed its name to evade criticism, but didn’t close.

The story might not be over. Queen Elizabeth II is reputed to have favoured elimination of all remaining executive powers. We'll see if Charles or William take this anywhere.

Hopefully before George becomes King because I think he's going to be an asshole.

The Royal Prerogative to declare war should be eliminated. Parliament should explicitly have to vote to declare war, rather than the Prime Minister being able to declare war unilaterally using the Royal Prerogative.

I think the monarchy will ultimately collapse under its own weight during the reign of William V. Young George may want to prepare for an alternate career.

I started this topic because of a post in another topic and didn't want to derail it.

Do you know much or care about the former British Empre?
Has it's actions ever made a difference in how you vote?
Were you even taught about in school outside of maybe history and perhaps geography class?

My argument would be that almost nobody in the US today gives a shit about it and it may as well be ancient Greek history.

I'm welcome to all opinions here good or bad about the British Empire as it's all valid as while it did some good it also did a whole load of bad.
I was taught about the British Empire back in school. Then most of the countries in the British Empire were granted their independence with many remaining part of the British Commonwealth. No, the British Empire never played any part in how I voted. I don’t think anyone cares about the British Empire, we’re probably more familiar with the Roman Empire than the British.

On what planet did you study history?

"Little Englands"?

And the indigenous peoples voted for that?

Excuse me but Britain FORCED ITSELF on the third world bringing disease, slavery, torture, capital punishment, and bad breath! Most of Western Canada is littered with unmarked indigenous children's eggs, the result of deliberate starvation by the English - Anglican Church with a lot of help from Catholics!

"left behind functioning societies my ass. The left behind mass graves!
By all means, return your land.

Thats quite a stretch.
George Washington, Israel Putnam, Robert Rogers, and many more in lower ranks who became historical figures in the American Revolution first served in the French Indian War, and many of them while on Canadian soil.

We were there for you then. We'll be there for you again. ;)

We don't expect you to be grateful ... not that you ever are.
Grateful to the country that's trying to destroy our economy so we become a non viable country?

Hard pass.
