The Beautiful Blue Wave

Democrats have been too insecure to claim a blue wave when the wave is there in front of them. Not only a record number of flipped House seats, but at least seven flipped governorships and hundreds of new state legislative seats were won Tuesday. The senate losses may still be balanced or almost balanced by senate gains, remarkable considering the 25 seats Democrats had to defend against just 10 GOP exposed seats. The unexpected, though still not completely decided, Florida defeats have put an undeserved pall on a great election night for the party.

Total Democrat votes outnumbered Republican votes by by almost six million.

Well, i'ts been a wave, though a slow one in coming, but definitely a wave. What, 37 house seats, 7 governorships, that's a major shift to the left.

Nate Silver this morning has increased the projected pick up to 38 House seats. The actual score would be 39 to 1, accounting for the single flip to the GOP.

Record?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_House_of_Representatives_elections,_2010
<snip>
Republicans regained control of the chamber they had lost in the 2006 midterm elections, picking up a net total of 63 seats and erasing the gains Democrats made in 2006 and 2008.

Although the sitting U.S. President's party usually loses seats in a midterm election, the 2010 election resulted in the highest loss of a party in a House midterm election since 1938,[6][7] and the largest House swing since 1948.[8]

This also happened to be the Republicans' largest gain in House seats since 1938.[9]

I heard on a radio show, maybe on the Smirconish Show, that Congressmen have a 98% chance of winning if they are incumbents.

40 republican resignations and 38 Democrat pick ups seems about right if that % is correct.

20 Republican incumbents were defeated. The other 19 were open seats. Democrats lost 1.

Most seats in congress in 40 years.
