Ronald Reagan told us government was the problem; but, he was wrong. Government is our shared solution when we must act together to address a common problem. But, of course, government is composed of people … imperfect people …
You're someone I can have a civilized debate with. And that's what I shall initiate.
Government can be many things.
I personally believe, if you have a truly accountable government, that they then should be in charge of the things that truly make the difference to every day citizens.
One area especially is Health Care. In my opinion, Health Care should not be in the hands of private corporations. Profit should not be associated with peoples well being in health terms. Call me crazy lol.
In real terms, if the government is truly accountable to its citizens, when it performs badly, it can be voted out, and the problem with whatever area you have can be fixed.
Sometimes with private business that's not possible. Especially in America where private industry has a monolopy on things like Health Care, can charge what they want, and had the influence to make up their own rules.
HOWEVER
Government can also be a destructive force. Especially when one looks at things like security. Secret governmental organizations, harrassing citizens based on Hearsay, it happens even up here.
Government CAN put unfair burdens on business, government can do stupid things, like tell us the other day, that we need to start pre bagging popcorn instead of bagging it on order. Which is a huge guest complaint. Stupid things like this are good examples of government being dumbasses.
All in all. If you can hold our government accountable. They should be in charge of certain basic things. If you can't. Then ordinary citizens have to step up and take that mantle. But on the whole, neither Private industry, nor government should have the complete and final say on anything. The people should.
