Now you are being silly. The Congress was quite happy to defund all of it as part of the shutdown. Then everytime they felt political heat from their base they would come up with a bill to fund this or that. It was a prime example of them trying to get out of the kitchen.

You don't have to close open monuments and parks due to a government shutdown as they don't require staff 24/7. Also you definitely don't have to close private businesses or parking lots. Yet you say I am the one being silly? You are too far gone.

but the private businesses in question relied on contracts provided by the federal government, so when the government had to shut down, those private businesses relying on federal workers and contracts suffered as a consequnce of the government shutting down.

I agree with you as far as parks and monuments are concerned. I can understand closing parts of parks if they are dangerous.

Boeing didn't shut down, so you're wrong. Contractors keep working during a shutdown.

That's why I thought they shut them down. Regardless of apparent dangerousness of a site, should there be no personnel at all if an emergency occurs, the liability would be outrageous,... well it shouldn't be, but you know as well as I some teapartier would fall down a cliff, get stranded for...15 days, and then in true hypocritical fashion would sue the US parks department and federal gov't for the troubles.
