This is what the right thinks is a patriotic post. It is, in fact, the opposite. Patriotism is not blindly ignoring your countries faults. It is not flying the flag or standing for the national anthem or shouting USA! USA! USA! at sporting events. Any idiot can do that. Or fake that.
Patriotism is learning your country's history and culture. In learning what is good and what is bad. In knowing how your elected leaders vote on issues. Hell, most of the "patriots" I've met in the last 40+ years can't tell you who their congressman is. I learned long ago that a good way to win an argument about politics is to ask, "Well, who's your congressman and how did he vote on these issues?" Then wait for the stupid look and walk away.
It's difficult to be a good citizen in a country with a representative government (Notice I didn't say "democracy.") It takes work, study, an open mind, and constant attention to what those in power are legislating and why. This education never ends.
In order to understand what's happening now you need to know how get here. For example, how the Smoot-Hawley Tariff Act, passed in 1930, contributed to the severity and length of the Great Depression, and take it account when thinking about tariffs now. If you understand the dangers of isolationism, trickle-down economics, authoritarianism, wealth inequality and so on, you learn that you need an educated citizenry.
If your education comes from video screens and radio programming, it's sadly lacking. America First! Love it or Leave It! Move to Canada! Are the slogans of shallow-minded people who, if allowed to triumph, will destroy us.
"The duty of a
true patriot is to protect the country from its government." Thomas Paine's words are as true today as when he wrote them.
