Texas high school sends Black student back to in-school suspension over his locs hairstyle

A Texas high school sent a Black student back to in-school suspension Tuesday for refusing to change his hairstyle, renewing a monthslong standoff over a dress code policy the teen’s family calls discriminatory.

The student, Darryl George, was suspended for 13 days because his hair is out of compliance when let down, according to a disciplinary notice issued by Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. It was his first day back at the school after spending a month at an off-site disciplinary program.

George, 18, already has spent more than 80% of his junior year outside of his regular classroom.

Maybe he should aspire to become an NFL football player.
That way he can wear his hair the way he wants and, if he is really good, then no one is going to suspend him for his hair.

Well gee golly wow. That there be a good idea. I mean, locs, that some serious shit right there. Maybe any of them lilly whites that got themselves a crew cut should enlist in the army since that is the best place for any lilly whites with crew cuts.
How about them hippies. Got longer than shoulder length hair? Dang, must be a hippie, best they get him working in some marijuana farms cause that where they belong.
Maybe the issue ain't the locs, maybe cause most people with locs are black folks, and we all knows how dumb they are, they only good for playin' football, amirite? Maybe basketball too? Sure you got an idea about that.

I wonder how they'd handle a Hasidic Jewish, Indigenous or Indian person with long hair.
for many Sikhs, long hair symbolizes their spirituality and connection to God

as per the Rehat Maryada (rules to live by) given by our guru's, a Sikh must never cut any hair from any part of the body.

When I went to school Indigenous boys commonly had long hair, as is traditional. How would the school in Texas handle that?

Well, Canuck, I must have hit a nerve with my comment.
Send me a picture of you and your locs (whatever they are) and maybe I can change my mind.
Any young person who does not pay attention to what others think about hair or manner of dress must be a) independently wealthy, or b) totally oblivious to rules and standards or c) indifferent to what employers are looking for in today's demanding capitalist society.
Good luck to such an indifferent and complacent attitude.

I doubt you'd ever employ a black person, regardless of hair length.

I worked for AT&T for 15 years and had to work closely with all genders and races from all over the world.
And people working for that firm would never be ignorant and defiant enough to wear their hair in an offensive and unattractive manner.
People working for AT&T are not cavalier to where they ignore dress standards in the workplace.

The behavior is racist. It needs to stop. Stop defending it.
A policy of hair is racist?
Indeed. They should not be harassing people because of their hairstyle.

Yet the only student being targeted is African-American.
How do you know that others were not talked to about hair style that violates school rules?

The article's photo shows him with his hair up, and it looks very nice. So why doesn't he just wear it up?

I had to Google to learn where this little community (population 7K) is. It's close to Dayton and Baytown. Two weekly newspapers serve several little towns. One's big news is "Chik-fil-A on Mont Belvieu menu": https://baytownsun.com/magazines/ch...age_abaf505b-ddff-5e65-b283-b56bf6fe9103.html

I find interesting that the article's byline is an AP reporter rather than someone from the Houston Chronicle. Maybe this is because this is a/the test case for the new Texas law that went into effect in September?

I am all for equal treatment. I am against people being punished because they wear their hair in the traditional cultural fashion. The school does not have the right to ban people from wearing culture-based hairstyles. The school needs to stay away from sticking its nose in the cultural affairs of others.

so if a person's tradition can allow them to wear civil war shirts right? if their parents parents fought in the civil war? that's tradition and culture and should be ok right ?

and what are you talking about "culture" ... hell we all had mullets like Billy Ray in 1980 .... that doesn't exempt rednecks from school dress code

so yeah, stop that .... this kid was born in the USA and just wants to make a scene and Democrats are all about using him and crying racism blah blah blah

its ridiculous

Apples/Oranges.

There is a LAW on the books because people in Texas could not be convinced to keep their right-wing bigotry to themselves.

No, it's not.

The kid has a hairstyle. The right-wing religious bigots in Texas don't like it because it's different than them. They want to force him to change it.

This is why the Crown Act was created.

A policy of hair is racist?
Texas has a long history of racist behavior. It was so bad that a new law called "The Crown Act" had to be created to keep those people in check.

How do you know that others were not talked to about hair style that violates school rules?

Honestly, I don't. Texas has a long history of racist behavior an a law had to be created to stop the bad behavior. Now some school officials are trying to make an end run around that law.
