A Texas high school sent a Black student back to in-school suspension Tuesday for refusing to change his hairstyle, renewing a monthslong standoff over a dress code policy the teen’s family calls discriminatory.

The student, Darryl George, was suspended for 13 days because his hair is out of compliance when let down, according to a disciplinary notice issued by Barbers Hill High School in Mont Belvieu, Texas. It was his first day back at the school after spending a month at an off-site disciplinary program.

George, 18, already has spent more than 80% of his junior year outside of his regular classroom.

"George said he feels like is being singled out because there are other boys in the school with longer hairstyles than his."

If that is correct, this is a problem. If it isn't, the issue is the opposite of what is claimed. He is not asking to be treated like everyone else. He is asking for special treatment.

his being black is 100% irrelevant. It is just race baiting.

Depends on what part is long, apparently. It said over the eyes and ears. Maybe longer hair that is more tidy is OK.

Mullets are okay? But not other long hair styles?

Yeah, that's a problem. If you are correct, he has an argument.

Our school just gave up on hair style dress codes... it was stupid seeing some girl get in trouble for dying her hair when teachers were walking around with dyed hair.

Luckily for us we can look up the dress code.

Seems a little ambiguous in some instance like "ribbons worn in good taste" and how much stricter it is for the boys than the girls.

I am mostly interested to see if what the kid said was true, that other boys have longer hair violating the code and are not called out on it.

Hair• Hair must be neat, clean and well groomed.• Geometric or unusual patterns (including Mohawks) shaved or cut in the hair are notpermitted.• Designs beyond a single straight direction which draw attention shall not be permitted.• Unnatural color or color variation in hair (i.e. scarlet, purple, blue, green, orange, etc.) willnot be permitted.• Ribbons and other types of hair paraphernalia must be worn in good taste and only whenappropriate to the hairstyle.• Boy’s hair will not extend below the eyebrows, below the ear lobes, or below the top of atshirt collar.• Ponytails or tails are not acceptable on male students.• Boys are not permitted to wear bobby pins, paper clips, beads, or other types of hairaccessories deemed inappropriate.• No student will be permitted to cut lines or designs in the eyebrows.

All rules are arbitrary... so what?
No they're not.

arbitrary:
based on random choice or personal whim, rather than any reason or system.

Schools really don't need different rules for hair for boys and girls anymore.

That's not really just about this rule, but in general, schools should just have the same requirements regardless of gender.

Why don't they just say "Everyone gets a flat top and we all march gloriously into 1955 together"?

😆

When I saw the picture of the young man, I had to wonder what the heck is the issue? It's neat, it's out of his face, and it looks good. Sometimes people just seem to get on a power trip and don't want to back down.

There’s always someone who thinks the rules don’t apply to them.

The school is discriminating, and it needs to cost the principal and the superintendent their jobs. The right wing has always had a problem with this type of behavior. Now it needs to start costing them large amounts of money.

I had to wear my hair style a specific way for 20 years to satisfy the Navy Department which was often controlled by democrats.

Where the **** where you when I didn't feel like sitting in the ship's barber chair?

More Jack hack nonsense.

Yeah, me too, but Texas has a well-known pattern of discrimination. It goes unchecked because the state is run by right-wing religious bigots.

This time the federal government needs to step on some necks (figuratively - so just relax and stay calm) until the bullshit stops. So far, the State of Texas has robbed this child of his junior year of high school. This needs to cost them every penny they have.

blah blah blah......

There are plenty of democrat racial bigots out there to go around including our current president..

Other images from when he was suspended indicate otherwise. His hair was longer than the school allowed and he was putting it up in weird man buns.
