Culture, huh? Let's back up one step further then: If all races have equality of opportunity, what is your explanation for why some have cultures that discourage productive behavior and others don't? Genetic inferiority?
Keep going, you're on a roll today. Don't worry, I won't "blame whitey." Far be it from me to call you a racist piece of ****.
If the system is so biased against minorities, why do the asian immigrants do so well? why do we have a black president? why do we have high ranking black military officers? why do we have black members of congress? why are there black CEOs?
if the system is so "unfair" to minorities, how do you explain all the successful minorities?
There is still a great degree of discrimination in the system but I believe that on the whole things are getting much better.
.
list some and be specific. I am always hearing about this "white privilege" but no one ever seems to give any details. It's always a vague, generalized blanket statement "you've benefitted from being white"
maybe those born rich have benefitted from being white, but tell some white kid born in a trailer park to a welfare mom how much he benefitted from being white.
it much more "rich privilege" than it is about being white.
you know, I keep hearing this, but no one can ever prove it. some people insist on acting like this is still 1950.
No one can prove it? There's tons of sociological data to support it. You're already online, why don't you do some of your own research? You're right, it's not 1950, people aren't getting lynched and don't have to go to separate bathrooms or the back of the bus, but let's not act like our society is colorblind because it's not.
and let's not act like there aren't plenty of opportunities for minorities out there if they choose to take advantage of them.
I haven't claimed otherwise.
a poor black kid in the housing project has the same opportunity as a poor white kid in a trailer park.
Not when **** like this happens:
Black Names and Racism in the Hiring Process - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
so now it's the employer's fault because momma named her kid shanaynay?
ever try getting a job if your name is bambi? or summer? or jimbob or any of a wide variety of other redneck or bimbo names?
little Sambo has the same opportunity as little Billy Bob or little Qui Chang
so now it's the employer's fault because momma named her kid shanaynay? hell, when I was teaching public school I had a kid in homeroom one year named "Shithead" it was pronounced "Sha theed"

keep em coming. for every example of discrimination against a minority you can dig up, I can come up with an example of where the same discrimination takes place against whitey.
the system isn't fair...but it isn't fair for everybody.
Why should someone's name even matter in the hiring process?
I'm not giving "examples." I'm giving you studies that shows patterns and trends with large sample sizes. I could go on and give you more stuff like racial profiling and how law enforcement deals with minorities, but for some reason I think attempting to change your mind with statistics is futile. The only real institution in society in which whites are disadvantaged is the NBA.
yep, you'll never convince me that minorities are victims of society. the bulk of the blame for their condition lies on their own shoulders.

If there's equality of opportunity as you claim, why should it MATTER what the kid's name is?
No you didn't. You got that story from Freakonomics.

the name matters, not the race. a white person with a stupid name is going to be discriminated against just as much as a black person with a stupid name.
OscarB63 said:as usual, you are clueless.
You can understand, though, that it's an offensive suggestion. Of course not ALL white people are like that -sure! Just like not all black people are good at basketball.
it's very hard for peopel to separate 'hardcore facts' from 'the emotional connection' to them.
Reading that really bothered me - maybe their research was flawed? None the less - those are the results.
I'm sorry if you felt offended, it was meant to be a joke, me and oscar kid around like that sometimes.
Totally agree
It's easy for one or two studies to be flawed. But when a bunch of studies are taken together and all come to the conclusion that racism still exists, then you know something's definitely up. You have to face reality no matter how hard it might be.
To me, getting a job means having the opportunity to rise up and overcome challenges, including the circumstances of birth and starting place in society. That's why the military is a good place to work, and advance.
Why no give scholarships to people who are most likely to graduate?
California is spending billions of dollars each year to run minorities in the front door only to have the go out the back door in the first year. I think that the reason they do it is to keep the schools going and to pat themselves on the back for helping the minorities understand just how dumb they are.
Absolutely - I waded through so many studies like that, and the results were all similar. . . it was EXTREMELY upsetting to me.
American Government and Americans in general have a horrible habit of CREATING problems - and then deciding "well - that's *your* problem, not mine" and stepping away from it all together instead of actually trying to change things.
It's not like everyone was on the same playing field - and then we gave extra privileges to one group of people just because they got together one day and said "hey, you know what . . . I think I was extra sauce with that goose"
But many people see the situation and think that's *exactly* how it happened.
I think any person with even an ounce of compassion would be upset at seeing the same things, but at least to me, it's not at all surprising.
Yeah...unfortunately that's just a part of human nature.
Being a history and political science major really opened my eyes to this. The world naturally possesses haves and have-nots. It's important we get to the root cause of such problems rather than just window dressing through things like affirmative action quotas and points on college admissions, those merely treat the symptoms and not the cause.
