Texas will begin building its own border wall and next week will start arresting migrants who trespass on private property, Republican Gov. Greg Abbott announced Thursday.
"Change is needed to fix the border crisis," Abbott said.
The order was one of several new initiatives announced by Abbott during the Border Security Summit, including appropriating $1 billion for border security, asking the federal government for relief for landowners and creating a task force on border security.
Laredo Mayor Pete Saenz said he was present for the summit breakout session that included local elected officials and said his impression was that Abbott's border wall was more of a border "fence."

Abbott "said 'fence' two or three times," Saenz said.
Saenz said Abbott did not go into the details of how and when the border wall would be built. But his understanding is that the border wall, the fence or the border barrier would become the basis for arresting migrants -- with the damage to the fence used as proof of the trespassing of private property.

Governor cannot even afford to keep the power grid functioning...nor can he seem to keep potholes filled and he thinks he can build a border wall? Step on federal supremacy laws and arrest immigrants on federal land? Interesting....he cannot even break ground on federal land and he cannot even resolve the Secure Fences act of 2006...which is still in court..btw...

Texas needs you to focus on Texas and stop grandstanding.....hurricane season is here now and tell us Abbott what have you done to fix flooding in Houston or Galveston? What have you done to be sure that the electric grid won't go down again in winter? Have you worked on making sure that the oil and electric industries are protected from hackers? Nah of course not....you are more worried about fences and spending money that does not need spent....to hell with electricity and clean water...who needs those anyway.

It's sad that a Governor needs to do a job that a President should...but won't.

I like the idea of more fences.
The Border Patrol wants more fences and walls.
Texas residents whose property is violated by migrants on a daily basis want better fences.
Abbott is the governor and has lots of money.
Why shouldn't he get more fences to protect the sovereignty of his state?
Good fences make good neighbors. Was Robert Frost wrong?

Sounds like this is just political grandstanding by the governor. (And possibly by CNN stoking political controversy with a misleading headline for clicks.) Sounds like what he's proposing is no different than what goes on all the time at the border. The "wall" as stated in the headline sounds more like a run-of-the-mill border fence in the article, likely only in the more heavily populated or trafficked areas, and according to the article the arrests will not be of families and children, only single undocumented adults.

In other words, pretty much the same MO that border patrol and ICE has been following for decades. Only he's pretending it's some new "initiative" due to the "open border" policies of the Biden administration. He gets a pat on the head from the party without doing anything meaningfully different, and biased news organizations on both sides get red meat for another night. This is politics at work.

He's running for president.

Immigration is like the country's no 2 worry right after COVID19

Robert Frost was only wrong if he honestly believed that good fences keep out criminals. They do not.

It's sad that a Governor needs to do a job that a President should...but won't.
He's not going to build any wall. Get serious. It's all just blowing smoke. Didn't you learn anything from four years of Trump?
For one thing, who's land will he build it on?

It's sad that a Governor needs to do a job that a President should...but won't.
The governor doesn't have the jurisdiction or the money to do it either...hell he cannot even keep the lights on in Texas and you expect him to build a border wall?

actually most of the people along the border do not want walls and fences running ragged through their property cutting them off from needed water supplies.

Nope, he is actually thinking he can build a new fence, wall whatever and enforce immigration laws at the border by arresting immigrants....this governor is off his rocker...he actually did say this...it wasn't misleading at all. However, Abbott cannot keep the infrastructure in good shape, so I doubt he can manage a wall or enough law enforcement to actually try to enforce immigration laws...

It’s sad that someone as dumb as Abbott is still in power.
Abbott has taken some bold steps... and we here in Texas love him for it:
- Banned CRT (Critical Race Theory) from schools
- Established Texas as a 2d Amendment "sanctuary state" so that Texas can ignore federal gun laws in
exactly the same manner that California and other states declared themselves "immigration sanctuary
states" and totally ignored federal immigration laws
- Kept Texas essentially open during the Covid pandemic. While other states mandated businesses stay
closed, ours were open. Our restaurants, malls, beaches and similar all stayed open. So did our schools.
As blue states closed their schools, ours stayed up and running. Many blue sates still have significant
restrictions on school operations. Texas kids will become doctors and astronauts as blue state kids still
struggle to read and write. Masks all but disappeared here long ago. FREEDOM RINGS IN TEXAS!
- Abbott has facilitated a new law, effective 1 September 21, that allows all legal gun owners to carry
open or concealed. We never have been required to have a permit or registration to purchase or own a
gun.
- Abbott withdrew the Texas National Guard early from the political and unnecessary show of force in DC.
- Abbott has facilitated a law which allows Texans to obtain a gun "suppressor/silencer" that has been
manufactured in Texas, without having a federal CLASS III stamp.
- Declared a state of emergency at the border with Mexico, allowing more stringent penalties for
apprehended illegal immigrants. He has also pledged to finish the border WALL within Texas.
- Established the first state-administered gold bullion depository in the nation, in Austin. It has grown,
requiring an annex to be built in nearby Leander. Such a facility would assist Texas in printing its own
currency, if required.
- He is calling the legislature back into session to ensure that the new voting law, which includes things
like mandatory ID and bans unsolicited ballot mailings, is passed to preclude any future election fraud.

Texas... where FREEDOM RINGS!!

Abbot is the dipshit who thought Jade Helm was a “plot to take over Texas”. As if the State Guard could stop Green Berets from doing.....anything, really

Anyone who feels the need to squawk about how much “freedom” they have....over and over....likely doesn’t have any.

Wow, I bet you get really frustrated when millions celebrate freedom on the 4th of July.

I have watched as blue states mandate that children can't attend class. I have watched as endless blue state businesses were closed due to state COVID mandates. I have seen whole populations submit and cower, donning their Obedience Masks without question. I have seen millions of families denied thrills at the beach, fun at the mall and more due to government orders. Meanwhile I have watched as Texas kids learn in a healthy school environment, families play at the beach and businesses thrive here in Texas. I have also watched as those who would diminish the Second Amendment in blue states have been ignored and our freedom here in Texas reaffirmed. I have watched as blue school board foster racism and hate in blue states with their CRT curricula while Gov Abbott has banned such racism and hate.

I have watched as our federal government has failed to defend our freedom by allowing an open border, allowing enemies like MS13, ISIS and more to come freely into our country. I have watched Gov Abbott pledge to defend our borders.

I especially enjoy Texas freedom because I have seen the lack of freedom not just in blue states, but in Iraq and even more so in Sharja.

Do I celebrate our freedom here in Texas? I sure do! And when I'm finished, I'll celebrate again!

Texans didn't face anything unique here.

The utility/power companies in the northeast has faced several severe ice storms that have killed many people and left areas without power for weeks and months.

But they still use the same antiquated system of utility poles that get snapped like twigs from ice, high winds, and nearby trees. Why? Because they say it costs too much to go underground.

Health care, the power grid and housing must not be important to Texans because it sure doesn't seem important to your governor. But ya got yer gunz!

Health care is something I have EARNED for my wife and kids. You obviously belong to the EVERYTHING FOR FREE crowd... well I don't. I EARN what I have. My taxes obviously pay YOUR WAY in life. Shame on you!

Our Power Grid failed for the first time I have been in Texas... about four years. I lived in California for twenty years before that where power outages were as routine as garbage pickups. So much for your left wing power grid silliness.

Housing IS important... that's why I went to school. studied hard, got a good job and earned good money. Housing, along with things like food and a car are nice to have. That's why I spend my own money on them.

What's with all the HYPERBOLIC assumptions!

And it was a doozy. Were the outages in California exactly the same?

Though your anecdote is heart-warming, there are possibly a few other Texans who might have a concern about housing. Just a guess.

Outages in CA are routine. This ONE outage in Texas was just that... ONE. And it didn't effect anything at all around here.
