There is a vetting process in place to determine if a claim is legitimate.
Immigration court records show that more asylum cases were denied over the previous five years than have been granted. In fiscal year 2016, 62 percent of asylum cases were denied, compared with 44.5 percent five years earlier. Among Mexicans and Central Americans, the approval rate is substantially lower.
If they couldn't be bothered to go to the embassy or consulate in their own country and request asylum, then why should we be bothered to even consider their claim when they show up here. Further they went through at least one country that could have accepted their claim. I am not interested in their claims.
I don't understand begrudging someone for wanting a better life for themselves and their families.
"Boo Hoo"! Poor Trump!Trump will if does not have money for the wall he endlessly claimed would be paid for by Mexico.
The problem is that process can take about two years and many don't bother to show up.

That's a big problem as well. Maybe Cruz's plan to get more immigrant judges will help alleviate it.
I hope so, can you imagine if all court cases had to be heard within 20 days or the accused must be released? No matter what the delay period is we need facilities to hold those folks until their case is heard - catch and release is a joke and most asylum claims are denied.
Cruz should certainly be sympathetic, as that surname doesn't sound very Native American. hopefully his bill just prevents Trump and perjury elf from splitting up families.
I thought I read somewhere that only about 5-10% of claims are approved.

Looks like Ted Cruz is spooked by Beto orourke
Well I think the democrats will refuse to support it because 1) it's Ted Cruz and 2) they really just want illegal aliens to be released and abscond because they benefit from illegal voting, and even if they don't they definitely benefit from them settling in California and Arizona and pumping up congressional and state legislative districts because they're counted equally for legislation, I mean Washington state would lose its bluest congressional district if illegal immigration was ended. So because the Cruz model is to create more detention centers and hire more asylum judges to cut down on the asylum claim timeframe and the vast majority (really all of them) do not have a valid asylum claim the vast majorty will be deported and they will simply return with children again and when the adult gets prosecuted for illegal reentry and sentenced to jail time requiring the child to be seperated the whole complaint will start all over again.
The Democrats want only to allow them to freely enter the country and settle, so if Cruz's bill eliminates seperating in any manner except by allowing them to enter and not going to get them when they don't show up for court (because they will definitely not show up for court) they will oppose it.
Because the current influx is trying to have it both ways, some are showing up at border crossings for asylum, but the majority are only claiming asylum after being detained for unlawfully crossing the border. so it's like "I'll immigrate illegally but if I get caught I'll say asylum" no, one or the other, try to cross illegally and deal with the consequences or present yourself publically to an official and try your chances there, don't use the claim to throw a wrench in the process of your removal.
We should really just say if you attempt to cross the border illegally you've automatically forfeited any right to an asylum claim, you can only make a claim by presenting yourself either at an official port of entry, embassy, consulate, military base or docked warship and requesting it from an official of the US Government and if you do not and instead try to make it over the border you can scream asylum all you want, you're being processed for removal.
U.S. CUSTOMS AND Border Protection agents are systematically violating U.S. and international law by blocking immigrants at international ports of entry on the southern border from entering the country so they can claim asylum. Immigration civil rights advocates have been documenting this illegal behavior since late 2016, from Texas to California. It was sporadic then, and appears to have been based at least in part on CBP’s difficulties with handling large numbers of people.
The situation is a political gift for some republican. People are willing to spend, bipartisan support, hero. One shouldn't play any games, just get it done and enjoy re election.
Presumably the half of GOP voters who support Trump's camps.
This is Ted Cruz we are talking about

i don't trust him, either. wouldn't be surprised to learn that there's something in this bill that is unsupportable. i hope that it at leasts keeps kids from getting separated from their parents, though.
There are those who feel this is nothing more than a way to speed up deportations. However, if it keeps the families together in the mean time I'm OK with it.
There's something else though. I don't trust Cruz and I wonder if he would've introduced this legislation if he wasn't up for re-election this November.

Yeah, and a Republican introduced it. What have Democrats introduced?
These kids aren't put in tents like some think.
