A popular TikToker who uses the platform to vlog his teaching adventures is getting mixed reactions to his in-classroom hair session with his female students. According to the educator, who goes by JaQ Lee on TikTok, he decided to live stream a group of his students unbraiding his hair ahead of his scheduled hair appointment at a hair salon.

After live streaming the experience, Lee was well aware of the mixed responses. To keep the conversation going, Lee decided to share a sped-up version of the on his TikTok page where he asked his 650,000 followers to “comment your thoughts.”

A Maryland teacher is getting a lot of attention and criticism after posting a video of his students unbraiding his hair in a classroom.

As of Wednesday, the video has been seen nearly 7 million times on the teacher's TikTok page alone, and it’s been reposted all over.

Marquis White said he is a middle school Science teacher. WUSA9 confirmed with Prince George’s Schools, he is a teacher in the county.

In the video, White said he asked 4-5 of his students who he calls “besties” for help. He said he only picked students that were finished with schoolwork and it all happened during the last 10 minutes of class.

In another video, White said he also lets his students paint his nails.

“The student you see in this video has goals and aspirations to be a nail tech. Her mom watches my videos all the time. Not only does she love it, but she signed a media release form for her daughter,” White explained.

The videos generated a lot of talk, with more than 20,000 comments. Some support White, saying "He’s more of a father than most.” Others are critical of the video, saying “This is too close and personal.”

What do you think? Appropriate, inappropriate or somewhere in between?

I don't see anything wrong with it but I'm old, and we used to play with our teachers hair, braiding it sometimes. We also got to play outside and our teachers got to do more than hand out dittos approved by the school, they got to teach. My gen X were latch key kids and our parents were always working. It was nice if you got along with the teachers.

I heard he got fired, is that true?

I don’t was he a good teacher besides that ?

As long as they're being paid the equivalent of the minimum wage, it might be considered acceptable.

Supposedly he's a great teacher, students love his class, and do really well. Sort of a big brother figure. I grew up poor, where all the parents worked full time, or you only had one parent, and those kinds of teachers really made a difference to me and my friends. I realize bad things do happen tho, and people may be uncomfortable trusting this. I can see both sides.

Not sure where I've seen what his teaching was like. Just because the kids like you doesn't mean you're a good teacher.

It really made me cringe when he called his students his best friends and they call him "bestie". Hopefully, the messages they were sending him were through school email and not his personal phone or social media page. Plus, he's filming his students' (minors) faces and putting it on social media. Major no-no (unless you have parental permission - probably depends on the school district's policies on that).

The whole thing is very inappropriate, IMO.

Most teachers are paid more - many MUCH more - than minimum wage.

Looking at his TikTok…it seems he has a really good relationship with the student body and is a very involved teacher and a coach.

It’s 2024. Teachers like this guy are breaking the mold and relating to students where other teachers likely fail. I’m all for it.

Thanks for bringing him to our attention. Hope to see more teachers like him.

I'm talking about the students, who are performing labor on the teachers hair, or nails.

Kids still play outside at school. There definitely are some bad teachers who just hand out worksheets all day long, but I had that back when I was in elementary and middle school too. Building a good rapport with your minor students doesn't need to include having them do your hair or calling them "besties". It's .... weird.

I think he's been "reassigned" pending school board decision.

"Dittos".....lol.

Ok. I am that old too.

He says in one of his videos they all got parental permission for the videos. Could be lying but thought I'd let you know.

I meant we played outside around the neighborhood. Not recess.

Different strokes I guess. It seemed pretty innocent to me, but like I said, I grew up in a time where the neighborhood raised you, and so did some of the teachers. I can see how some might think it's not appropriate.

You can relate to students and be a great teacher without doing things like this.

If the roles were reversed and it was a female middle school teacher asking 5 of her favorite "bestie" male minor students to brush her hair, braid/unbraid her hair, it would still be very weird.

So true!! The only time my parents cared about school was when it was vacation, because I wouldn't have a school sitter. lol Thank goodness I had a neighborhood of other misfits. :ROFLMAO: My parents relied on the village for raising children.

Yeah, this had to be some real Karen level nonsense.

These are middle school aged teenagers and a very popular teacher who now seems to be suspended.

Well done Karen - one less teacher. 😂🙄

Appropriate? Probably not. But not a serious problem.
Creepy? Absolutely.

I have a feeling he'll end up in an Uncle John's Bathroom Reader "Creative Teaching" page in one of their future editions...and that's not necessarily a good thing.

Oh that's a shame. Throwing the baby out with the bath water seems to be the new black. Better safe, and not sorry I guess? 🥹

Wouldn’t it, @BirdinHand?

Inappropriate.
Yes, thats terribly inappropriate for a high school teacher.

There should be NO physical contact between a high school teacher and their students outside of an emergency situation.

One less teacher in a classroom in that district.

A popular one at that.

Win for Team Karen, right @Josie ?

I didn’t say anything like that. I said if a female teacher asked 5 male minor “besties” to brush or braid/unbraid her hair that would be weird. Wouldn’t it?
