A man has admitted to driving the vehicle from which Jazmine Barnes, 7, was fatally shot in Texas last week, according to a prosecutor at Harris County Probate Court.

Eric Black Jr. told officials he was driving the vehicle while another suspect Larry W. opened fire from the front seat on the vehicle in which Jazmine was a passenger, the prosecutor said in court.

These guys shot at the wrong car. Black has been charged with capital murder. Still wondering about who & where Larry W. is.

The police received an anonymous email tip that led to Black's arrest.

'It was not immediately clear if the other suspect, Larry W., has been arrested.'

A tip from activist Shaun King led police to a suspect in the killing of Jazmine Barnes

(CNN) Police have arrested a suspect in connection with the death of 7-year-old Jazmine Barnes, and they're giving credit to a tip from social activist and writer Shaun King.

The arrest of Eric Black Jr. -- who said he was driving the vehicle used in the shooting -- came as a result of a tip King received and sent to Harris County Sheriff Ed Gonzalez, the sheriff said Sunday.

Maybe this is a dumb question but wasn't the shooter white? I mean, I could swear that all the reports were about a white guy in a red pickup.

So are we talking about the same shooting here?

If I had to guess, I'd say that the victims went through a traumatic experience and mistook a white guy in a pickup for the shooter, and the police followed procedure for this kind of case by releasing the sketch based on that mistake. Given your background, as I'm sure you're aware, most people don't know which way is up once bullets start flying by, especially when they and their loved ones are being shot. As I understand it, law enforcement thought the shooter was white, but the tip that led to the driver was apparently pretty solid.

While most people involved in a situation like this are out of whack on some details it's a bit unusual to have the PD release a sketch showing a person of one race when the actual shooter is another race. Maybe everyone's emotions got the best of them in this but that's a pretty serious screw up. I mean, it's rather unlikely that a white person blaming a black person for shooting their kid would get the benefit of the doubt when it turns out to be a white guy.

This case illustrates why it is very unwise to jump to conclusions when the media play up certain (false) accusations that only inflame the tragedy.

Shame on the media for always looking for a chance to stir up trouble.

The same Shaun King posted that the white guy did it, but it turns out he was driving in that area and was fleeing the shooting.

I'll bet we know who Larry is very soon.

So, what do you think should have been done differently?

from my vantage, it seems the media reported the story as it unfolded
what should the media accounts have eliminated from or added to their coverage

This is a case where the police are well entitled to be praised for prompt professionalism and I offer it unreservedly.

Good job by the police and good job by those concerned citizens who decided to get involved in helping them to make these arrests. An outstanding example of how good things can happen when the police and the community are able to work together to solve problems.
