"Through July, DOGE said it has saved taxpayers $52.8 billion by canceling contracts, but of the $32.7 billion in actual claimed contract savings that POLITICO could verify, DOGE’s savings over that period were closer to $1.4 billion."
Despite the administration’s claims, not a single one of those 1.4 billion dollars will lower the federal deficit unless Congress steps in. Instead, the money has been returned to agencies mandated by law to spend it....
DOGE’s savings calculations are based on faulty math. The group uses the maximum spending possible under each contract as its baseline — meaning all money an agency could spend in future fiscal years. That amount can far exceed what the government has actually committed to pay out.
Yep, a lot of the claims made by DOGE were lies. I know, we're all shocked. Shocked and stunned.
One example is a much-hyped shelter capable of holding 3,000 unaccompanied migrant children that wasn't being used. DHS says it was paying $18 million a month to keep the facility open, and be ready for use with two weeks' notice -- i.e. they had to maintain the building and pay some staff. Canceling the contract likely saved $125 million for 2025. If it was never going to be used again, that made sense, though we should note that it's switched between used and unused over the past several years.
Anyway: DOGE Math to the rescue!!! The original contract was for sheltering 3,000 migrant children for 5 years, with a budget of $3.3 billion. Since the facility wasn't in use, nowhere near that amount was being spent. DOGE still treated $2.9 billion as a "savings" on its Wall of Doom.
Yes, this is pretty esoteric, but it's typical of DOGE's claims. It's deliberately misleading the public to make itself seem Super Effective, when in reality it was just an excuse to gut any agency that could hold Musk accountable (and yes, that includes USAID, which was looking into Skylink's contracts in Ukraine) and steal as much data as possible.
