Suit: NJ town officials harassed cop about weight -- Newsday.com

SEASIDE PARK, N.J. (AP) _ A former police sergeant has sued his former department and the borough council for harassing him about being overweight.

In a lawsuit filed in federal court Thursday, James C. Citta claims he was told by former Seaside Park Police Chief William Beining III that his weight would prevent him from ever being promoted.

The harassment continued even after Citta underwent gastric bypass surgery in 2001, the suit claimed. He suffered retaliation for giving legitimate parking tickets to firefighters and lifeguards and was threatened with sanctions if he spoke to borough council members about police issues, even though he was allowed to do so, the suit said.

Now I think obese cops are a disgrace to their uniform, but Seaside heights seems to be completely wrong here in their treatment of this overweight officer. They should have just fired him for not being fit for duty......

Instead they seemed to have broken the law in thier harrassment of this guy.

Just as a point of reference....how big was he?

from the picture i saw, he would have problems fitting into a squad car. i would say pushing 350 easy.

I agree with the that. How ever I have to wonder if he was actually harassed, where they trying to encourage him to loose weight or is there more to the story than whats being said and he is just some fat **** who thinks being obeast(yes it is deliberate misspelling) is a handicap or makes him a minority.
