Its Friday evening on the 17th of February. I have a challenge for tomorrow for you. As you are watching TV tomorrow (Saturday) take note on how many commercials feature the dumb white guy. You know what I mean right? The dumb white guy who cannot do anything right, who gets hurt doing stupid things, who people all laugh at. Keep a running count on Saturday and report back........If you can count.

These ads clearly work, or the companies wouldn't be spending money on them.

I'm guessing the target audience is black/latinos of either gender, plus white WOMEN. Between all of them, it's a healthy majority. I also wouldn't be surprised if some white guys respond to the ads too: telling them they're failures in life because of their junk and the color of their skin, actually pleases them. "That explains it! I'm being discriminated against, it's not that I'm fat and stupid."

There is so much more that offends me in advertising. I deal with it by avoiding advertising.

Is it that? Or is it that women and minorities are "off limits" to parody, which leaves only the white guy to poke fun of?

What annoys me are pharmaceutical commercials, shouldn't doctors be recommending prescription drugs, not advertisers?

Plus they all have this line that says something like "Do not take prescription drug x if you are allergic to prescription drug x"

Freaking duh!

While you are at it, do not eat peanuts if you are allergic to peanuts, and do not eat selfish if you are allergic to shellfish.....sheesh!

Why so easily offended? They're just jokes, lighten up.

Or could it be that you're just more sensitive to mockery and negative stereotyping when it's YOUR type of people being mocked?

For instance, adds for women's personal hygiene products just make you go "ick" so you don't notice there's a smug white woman using the product and a dumb white woman getting blood on her clothes. The negative example is often used to contrast with the "smart" consumer who is using the product.

I do think dumb men examples are used to sell to women, more than dumb woman examples are used to sell to men. But I think race is still mostly off-limits. If it wasn't, surely you'd be complaining about "dumb white people" in ads?

More men are portrayed as dumb because more men are dumb

Report back after tomorrow with your tally of how many dumb white guy commercials you see vs how many dumb woman commercials you see. Personally I Have not seen a dumb woman commercial in many many years. Its verboten.

I think that's it. But that's okay. At some point there will be the unspoken feeling that we're all equal. When that happens, you'll be able to make fun of everyone. May take awhile.

What makes you think this will happen?

1. I'm not going to watch advertising just for "research"
2. Not all ads are directed at the same audience. It could be that the content you seek out also appeals to dumb white guys, and they just have a better sense of humor than you do when it comes to ads.

I watch so little advertising I probably shouldn't even have posted. Maybe if you gave me some examples?

I don't really believe that. Women are just better at hiding it. "I wasn't wrong, I just changed my mind" doesn't come easy to men.

Ahh but if men are dumber its possible we wouldn’t be aware of it

Have white people considered not doing stupid things?

Oh, this is an Oppressed White Man™ thread.

You mean white men right?
It's so difficult to see you being oppressed by everyone. Have you considered any solutions to being walked over by literally everyone?

Thoughts and prayers to the horribly victimized white dude. I hope he can find a safe space where he can explore his emotions and have a good cry.

Exactly! I'm sure that there must be plemty of commercials in the USA featuring 'dumb black guys and you don't hear them complaining.

Honestly, I think both men and women are ashamed to be "trying hard." Women are better at trying without it showing, whereas men assume they'll get caught so they don't try.

The very smartest people think hard all the time, but for the rest of us it requires effort. There are other factors in being an effective thinker, but I won't attempt to list them because I'm not a very effective thinker. But the two big factors are native intelligence, and effort.

Women try harder, basically.

Yes, that seems to be a reasonable explanation.

To the best of my knowledge, commercials here in the States never feature any "dumb" guys of that background.
