Hi everyone,

a European newbie joined the forum. :2wave: I'm from France to be precise. I am very interested into politics, sociology and society debates in general. I know nearly as much about European politics as I do about American politics. I'm a University student and I take US History classes.

I might not always take part in the discussions but I will most probably read actively.

This forum seems to have a bunch of nice and "civilized" people, from many different political affiliations, which I will certainly appreciate.

Well, that's it. Talk to you on the forum! ;)

What do they 'teach' you in your US History Class? That America is a white dominated racist culture that slayed the injuns and enslaved the blacks just for kicks; and then they forced Japs into internment camps and now they go after the poor arabs who only killed a measley 3,000 people on 9/11 (which was no big deal by the way)? Cuz that's what they teach in US History Classes here, unfortunately.

LOL. No, not exactly. The texts we study are more or less objective and neutral. During the 1st semester of this year, we learned the Colonial period, the making of the nation with the War of indepndance, multiculturalism, the Civil Rights movement, immigration etc..We did learn about slavery and segregation, but it is part of your history, even if it's not always beautiful.
During the 2nd semester, we learned more about the political and consitutional process. We learned about the US Constitution, the different powers, legislative, executive and judicial, Federalism, the political parties, education, social protection...etc.

Actually, my teacher is American but has a very biased opinion. But in University we're old and educated enough to have our opinion. Our job is not to take what they say for granted but criticize it as objectively as possible.

I don't deny it as being part of my history, but I was just wondering if that was the only thing your class focused on, was how evil America is, and you've just shown that it isn't that way in your class. Though in some classes it is that way. Which is really unfortunate.

No offense but our history is not a very nice topic. While I do agree the way our gov't is balanced is a very good thing in our history, you must also take into account the dark side, which there is a lot of. Here's a some stuff I can list off the top of my head:

Manifest Destiny
The Trail Of Tears
Segregation
Slavery (in general)
Japanese Internment Camps In the 1940s! FOR F***S SAKE WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!
The Vietnam War
The War in the Philipinnes
Custer's Last Stand (not a good thing to priase)
The Civil War (oxymoron)
The Masons (They were one of this nation's largest influences and that's saying a lot for a cult)
And Last But Not Least...
Not intervining in the Rwandan Genocide (F*** you Clinton, you're just as bad as Bush to me)

Is this the "welcome" section? Or has it turned into a debate thread already? ;)

Anyway, thanks Apostle13.

Every country has its dark side. But it shouldn't be the only thing discussed in classrooms. What about our glorious victories of the Revolutionary War, the War of 1812, WW1, WW2, Afghanistan, etc. What about the Civil Rights Movement and its victory? The Moon Landing? The construction of Lady Liberty? I could go on!

Please excuse my rudeness, but I do believe I forgot to say hello when I first engaged in the conversation on this thread. So: Howdy!

Welcome to the forum:D:2wave:

Pretty much everything turns into a debate around here...LOL

If you say the sky is blue there is going to be at least a couple tin foil hat guys screaming that it's orange and the blue is just a government coverup to keep us placid and easy to manipulate...lol

Enjoy !!!

Sacre bleu! Another Frenchman. Bonsoir mon amie, comment ca va? (What does that mean? I just thought it and typed it. )

Anyway, welcome to DP, don't worry you'll get used to the feeling.:rofl Oh man, 'DP' is funny every time I type it!

Sorry, forget porn industry euphemisms and welcome to DebatePolitics, it's great to see more Europeans joining and I hope to see you posting around.

Orange? That's just laughable everyone knows it's green and anyone who tells you different is a propagandist stooge for the illuminati and the tri-lateral commission.

I just feel as if no one ever looks at the bad side anymore. Yes, I know were the greatest nation in the world because of the fact that every citizen is 'free' but I can tell you most of the stuff I mentioned comes from a time in our history when when freedom was not this nations main characteristic. Ever since wwII we have been on an exponential increase in individual freedoms.
