Stimulus to bring body scanners to airports

Scanner maker Rapiscan taps stimulus to hire factory workers - Jan. 5, 2010

NEW YORK (CNNMoney.com) -- The U.S. government is using $25 million in stimulus money to buy and install full body scanners in airports this year, in an effort to ramp up security and create jobs.

The Transportation Security Administration is using funds from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to purchase 150 of the full body scanners, according to TSA spokeswoman Sarah Horowitz.

Can someone please tell me how the hell this is "stimulous"?

The more bs crap they do to avoid profiling, the more its going to cost us.

Stimulous occurs when you feel the tickler as you walk through the scanner.

This is the sickest idea I've seen be implemented in a LONG time...

Who wants to place wagers on how long it takes before some airport security guard is brought up on child porn charges for 'selling' the naked body scans of children?

I hope everyone here understands that these body scanners really are akin to stripping down on camera for the security guards... that used to be humiliation tactics reserved for minorities, now everyone gets the equal treatment...

Next will be the taser bracelets to board the aircraft... why not make all air travel more complex then a prisoner transfer?

Could these new body scanners be considered torture?

Does an alarm go off if it's too big?

It's sure going to stimulate Body Scanners R Us who will be able to sell their scanners to the government with a 400% markup from normal retail price.

Government: "I'd like to buy some full body scanners".
Sales rep - "Those scanners are $10,000 dollars each...oh wait, you are the government?..I meant $100,000."
Government: "No problem. Do you take deficit checks?"

Oh I get it... mandatory strip searches to board a plane is fun...

The scans DO violate british child porn laws. Think about that...

If not, think that the same guy that's gonna laugh about the size of your member also gets a naked scan of your significant other, and your children.

I hope this doesn't stay a laughing matter.

This is what the scanners show...

Why don't they just have you strip search in line? On camera nonetheless.

Are there any health risks?? I mean this does look like a type of x-ray afterall...

If 20 years ago a science fiction book was written where people would have to naked body scan to get on a plane, it would have been called 'impossible' or 'noone would ever accept that'.

What does she have up her ass?

For health risks, these things I believe are mm wave, not x-ray. But it's still a form of electromagnetic radiation. I'm not sure what consistent exposure would do. And it's rather...shall we say detailed.

TSA, now hiring all perverts.

that's a handgun in her back, and I'm not sure what's on the front.

I figured as much, that it's probably not good for you.

That's what I was thinking... it's only matter of time where these scans hit the 'childporn' market.

It's ok though, you still have the right to fly, you just have to humiliate yourself for the security guards before they let you on.

The next step is 'taser bracelets' I bet. I hope people fight this kicking and screaming. I couldn't picture better timing for this underwear bomber in terms of the companies making these scanners.... now the whole world is buying these and installing them.

Certainly doesn't look like it's in her back....

Hehe, yeah have the FBI standing next to the TSA officials and everytime a child goes through, the TSA officials are arrested for possession of child porn.

The next step is 'taser bracelets' I bet. I hope people fight this kicking and screaming.

hey hey hey hey, don't you want to be......safe?

As to the "perverts" claim - Supposedly, the people looking at the scans are in a room that is separated from the place where the people are actually going through, so they never get to see you. Furthermore, can you actually imagine spending all day looking at one second rough outlines of nude travelers in all their obese and foul glory? I doubt you'd find it arousing after about 45 seconds on the job.

As to the "child porn selling" claim - Supposedly, the way the machines work is that it takes the image, it's viewed by the third party, and then it's automatically deleted. There are no images saved. Furthermore, do you honestly think that an image like the one above would even be considered "porn?" I mean, look at it - in the internet age, that's nothing.

I was mostly just joking about the pervert/child porn thing.

But I don't like the idea of everyone being scanned like that.

Why? What is it about the human body that you find distasteful enough to hide it despite the possibility of it containing something (bomb etc etc) that may kill you or yours?

Lots of things can kill me, many things have a much higher probability of killing me than a terrorist. I'm not freaking out about that or submitting to scans or surveillance or anything like that for those reasons. So why should I freak out about this? It ain't no one's business what's underneath my cloths. If the cops have reasonable suspicion to search my body that's one thing. But till that time I have the right to secure my person, papers, and property from unreasonable search and seizure.

Nice rack.

It is airports securities right to know what is underneath your clothes.

And cops are not the ones that will be searching you.

Airport security has a right to know what is underneath a person's clothes?

Interesting statement. Wrong, but interesting.

Just throwing it out there, but government does not have rights in our system of law. It has responsibilities. Individuals have rights.

No it's not. The government/authority are not the entities which possess rights. Only individuals possess rights. The government must act according to my rights.

Very well, responsibility then. It has a responsibility to make sure that the majority is safe. They cannot do that if you get squeamish every time you go to fly but are in a hurry so decide that the rules shouldn't apply to you.

It must act in accordance with everyone else's rights also. Their right to live supercedes your right to privacy.

I would hardly call one aborted terrorist attack a threat to the lives of everyone, not to mention that it was human error which resulted in the fool getting past security in the first place.

The scanning machines wreak of corporatism just like the flu shot. Look at how fast these body scanners got rolled out... in less than two weeks following the underwear bomber. You can bet this contract was lined up just waiting for the next attack. For all we know, the sloppy human error was deliberate to create fresh panic for new "safety" procedures.

The scanners can still be bypassed. Simply hide something up your ass. What next, mandatory cavity searches to get on planes? I mean really. Why does every domestic terminal in the U.S. need these? I can understand the international terminals, but you shouldn't need to be subjected to this to fly from point A-B in your own country.

As for the radiation dose, it's very minimal, but there are no studies that have been done yet about repeated exposure (i.e. 4-5 times a year). I don't care what they say is "safe". It's still a radiation dose and everyone's reaction is different. 100% deet was "safe" 50 years ago when they were spraying it copiously on buildings and people, now they're all dying of parkison's. It's a new technology and we know nothing about it.

First, such scanning devices would reduce human error. Second the possibility is still there. What if the last terrorist attack hadn't been conducted by an idiot? But by someone that actually knew what they were doing? What about the next attack?

For some odd reason the disregard for peoples lives that has been shown around here really doesn't surprise me. :(

These scanning machines have been on the back burner for 2 years at least. The fact that they are being rolled out so quickly is not surprising when you know why they have so many on hand already.

The 9/11 hijackers boarded their planes in the US..not outside of it.

While the use of the technology may be new the actual technology behind it really isn't all that new.
