Star Wars Episode VII tentatively slated for 2015 . . . by Disney.

Holy ****

I'm not sure what to think. I love me some Star Wars, but will these movies be a train wreck? I mean are they going to follow the series of books that went on after episode 6? Are they going to conflict with the books? This is surprising to say the least.

Jacen Solo is gonna kill Mara Jade in all kinds of epicness, we aren't ready for Darth Caedus!

You are assuming these movies will carry on from the Expanded Universe that's already been established.

Remember, though, that we already have 3 iterations of the Clone Wars era.

That of the animated series.

That of the comic book series.

And that of the CGI animated series.

There's just a good of a chance that they'll take continuity in a totally different direction than they will adapt already published storylines.

Damn I haven't thought of those names in years, read all those books in middle school.

That would be blasphemy!

As for the new Star Wars installments, the companies said Lucasfilm’s Kathleen Kennedy would be executive producer on Episode 7 and any more Star Wars movies, and Lucas would serve as creative consultant. There was no indication about where the story would pick up, though technically in the franchise’s chronology it would follow Star Wars: Episode 6 — Return Of The Jedi, the third film in the initial trilogy that came out in 1983.

Well, provided that the other talent is good, this bolded portion is potentially good news. Lucas has a so-so record of being director (Revenge of the Sith notwithstanding).

I am ashamed by how much this news brightens my day.

I'd like for something good to come from this, but I'm not holding my breath.

That's a long time to hold your breath for anyway. I wouldn't recommend it. ;)

No, Lucas has a rather bad record of being a director.

He directed the prequels with his own money and directed them himself, and so had complete creative control. That's why they're so godawful.

But he's redeeming himself with the Clone Wars CGI TV series, which he is only producing. And they are quite the ossum. But only because he's keeping himself to being just a producer and letting better writers and directors write and direct the show.

He directed 4 films, two of which were good (and one of those being a classic), and one of which could have gone somewhere, but largely did not, with the other largely being an abomination.

Edit: Numbers don't suit me well.

this makes the geek in me very happy lol

The reason why "A New Hope" was good, though, at least in comparison to the prequel trilogy, is because he was accountable to producers and studio executives who had veto control over his creative direction.

It should be noted that the most well-regarded of the Star Wars movies - "The Empire Strikes Back" - was not directed by him.

I myself am still partial to the first and third in the original trilogies more so than TESB.

But you are perhaps correct.

This is not a joke.

UPDATE: BREAKING: 'Star Wars 7' Slated For 2015 As Disney Buys Lucasfilm; - Deadline.com

This is one of the more stunning developments in the entertainment world, ever, and the implications are boundless.

Hmm. This is potentially pretty cool, but hugely problematic for a wide variety of reasons.

First, I don't trust Disney. They have a reputation for really screwing with talent in the Industry, especially writers, so I have no idea what they'd do with something like Star Wars.

Second, from an extended universe standpoint, they'd either have to ignore all of the books, and pick up waay the hell after the events of Jedi; or they'd have to essentially create one or more of the book trilogies in movie format (most likely the Thrawn trilogy, which was the only one that didn't suck, in my opinion).

This brings us to the third problem: who the hell will play the incredibly iconic lead characters? That will be very, very tricky, espcially with Disney invovlment. Luke, I suspect, would be relatively easy to cast, but Han? Who doesn't love Han? How can they possibly not **** that up?

In short, I'm willing to give them the benefit of the doubt, but I'm not expecting much.

You're really a Star Trek fan, aren't you?

You will not enjoy it because you are not a true Jedi. To master the force you have to give up your illusion of control. :)

I think the Han Solo Trilogy would make a great series, but of course, it would not be 7.

I hope that the next trilogy will be more like the original. I found the prequel trilogy to be a massive letdown.

I do like Star Trek (TNG, not the origial series, and DS9 was okay), but I'm an afficionado of most geek properties to varying degrees. I don't think I ever read the Han Solo trilogy, but you're right that that'd have to be it's own thing, and not "Star Wars 7." I do think the Thrawn trilogy has potential, but seriously, what actors are going to walk into those roles without getting lynched by angry fanboys?
