Southern Tradition of Women Hyphenating Last Name

My roots run deep in the South. Yet I have never understood this Southern tradition.

It is common here for women to carry their maiden names as a middle name.

Then their kids, boys even, have to carry the hyphenated name.

Clearly, its a failure to submit to their husbands.

Thoughts?

My mother did also, and so did I. My step daughter hyphenated her name when she married. She had an established career, and had no wish to give up her name entirely. My niece never changed her last name at all. All from the north.

Obviously you misunderstood my post, which might have been difficult for you. My intent was to convey astonishment that you thought boys should somehow be shielded from this horror of carrying their mother's name. But thanks for the link to wikipedia and John Parker Wilson.

What are you wanting me to read slower? There is nothing about "southern tradition" in the article you posted.

Or are you talking about your assertion that it is a "southern tradition"? I see that, why do you think I asked? It's not a southern thing.

My mom kept her name and I got the hyphenated name. Also not from the South. Submission lol.
 
Giving your child a double first name like Bobbie Sue IS NOT the SAME as hyphenating your name when marrying. Please try to honestly defend your opening post and not dance around moving the goal posts constantly.

Why did she alter her name at all?
Christmas, when I got married in 1978 I told my wife not to change her name.
Obviously it is 2024 so that ship has sailed.
The only women taking a man's last name are to make insecure men feel secure, powerful.
 
Why would I thank you, because Southern Living said it was a southern thing? Another assertion without much backer.

Or rather, the article was not about hyphenating last names, it was the double name: Bobby Sue, Joe Bob, Mary Jane, etc.
