Red states, particularly in the south, have long been supporting candidates of one party wanting to slash Federal spending. Yet, these states are consistently at the top of the heap for those that pay less into the national treasury, but receive the most in terms of aid and funding.

How is this dichotomy to be addressed?

but if they are in need of aid how can you expect them to pay more ?

What is counted as "welfare"? Southern states generally have lower incomes (as well as cost of living) so income redistribution is naturally "attracted" to those southern states. Many of these southern states also have a much higher number of SS/Medicare retirees, due to low state taxation, cost of living and a more favorable climate. Not many are apt to move from Texas or Florida to retire in New York, yet the reverse is quite common. ;)

I was questioning the dichotomy, that they overwhelmingly vote for supposedly conservative candidates that speak against Federal largesse, but still receive so much in the meantime from the same hand.

Strange indeed. Reminds me of the stay at home mothers who decry the "47 percent" as leeches who contribute nothing to society, not realizing their membership in the group.

it is the same as in the other countries because the rigthist mentality in people usually prevents them from thinking rationally and gets them to support the power which conserves the "money ".

Really? Perhaps just a few of them are able to stay home because another family member is working to pay the family's bills. Would you really be happier if they were instead competing for jobs outside the home, displacing those needier folks and leaving their children to run wild? ;)

You're absolutely correct, but it's a point that seems lost on said people, even if they themselves are in that exact scenario. They tend to attribute the worst characteristics and motives to others who are in similar circumstances or mired in poverty. Most who gripe about that figure don't have the slightest clue as to who comprises it.

Yet folks, like you, would squeal racism, unfairness and all manner of evil things should they try to refuse to dole out that federal aid, as directed by the "law of the land". ;)

TTWTT, I am a Libertarian like you. You won't find me crying racism to often, but I will point matters of contradiction out when I see them. For our ideas to gain a stronger foothold, we need to call the contradictions out in the local, state, and national level within both dominant parties when we see them. Or, are they really one beast holding liberty and smaller government back...a demorepublican cabal?

I think stay-at-home mothers contribute greatly to society.

Republicans hate government handouts until it's time for them to collect or their turn at the trough is threatened.

Yet, when I point out the reasons for this, you simply ignore them. Federal income taxation (FIT) is *gasp* based on income level; so states with lower incomes pay less in FIT. States with more retired people get more SS/Medicare. States with more low income people get more aid from federal income redistribution programs. One can be both against a law and yet still obey it. ;)

I am sorry for that. I try not to hog certain subjects with my ideas. I meant no offense. Give me some time to think more deeply on this, and I will post a reply. I was having some fun on another thread. The political ones are a little too serious for me at most times.

I think you would find that if in Stockholm, you and I would be having a brew at Kvarn (Lisbeth Salander's hangout from the books and movies, "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo," just around the corner from my flat) and agreeing more than disagreeing.

You know, I was a member of the GOP for over thirty years. The last few years has seen me waver, or rather, openly look about at what might be the truth in some matters. I did my best in finding another answer to this topic, but keep coming up with the same thing. Red States, despite crying out for Federal deficit control, take an unusually large percentage of pork from the same treasury. Despite not believing it much of the Democratic philosophy as a party, the hypocrisy of the GOP has come to really be distasteful.
