So my car shuts off at red lights

Thanks liberals (sarcasim)

This stupid "feature" is because automakers need tricks to meet government mandated standards.

Yes I have a bypass switch but it resets every flipping time you get in.

Boo Hoo! Buy a 1970 Dodge Dart. 🄱

Okay. It was your choice, so you got it. Gonna keep it or trade it in? It probably saves gas. Some things come with little annoyances. Like I said, there's a tiny but noticeable delay from when I floor the car to when the turbo kicks in, but when it does, I feel the g-force on my back. Wouldn't trade it for anything.
The point is they never would have dine that if not for unrealisitc emissions standards.

My wife's car does that. Never was an issue when I've driven it. Hit the gas and you're moving just about as quickly as if it hadn't shut off.

The things people rage about . . .

And, I'll add, if you have a hybrid then the electric motor will get you going first. You won't notice a damn thing.
Although my car does this it never bothered me. I just focus on important things.

Sounds like you failed to evaluate your car purchase thoroughly.

Bummer.

I remember the first time that kicked in for me, I thought it was an engine stall. But it's not, and as soon as you attempt to move, it starts up instantly. Good to avoid all the fumes with people idling their cars. No problem as soon as I knew what was going on,

Until your starter breaks down...

What make and model of such a car is this?

I want to know because I am thinking of getting a new car, and I want to avoid any automaker who thinks that is a good "option."

Progress.

Lower emissions help everyone. Enjoy the peace and quiet at red lights

I don't think I've had to replace a starter on any car made in this century...

Maybe my friends have on trucks built a few decades ago...

actually I bet it is everytime you start the engine it resets if you have it off.
my Subaru is that way. No big deal. It is part of my start up procedures.

I turn off the radio, ac, fan. lights (if they were on) when I shut down the car.

so my start up is, start the car, put on seat belt, (by then the system has booted up, turn on fan, turn on a/c check temp setting, turn off auto start/stop, check mirrors, turn on radio if I want music, and then ready to drive.
the Subaru I have has a touch screen for most controls.

Like you I turn it off everytime I drive the car. No big deal. Just glad the off switch is easy to access by being part of the main menu display.

According to Google AI that is not an issue:

Does auto stop ruin starter?

AI Overview

No, auto start/stop systems do not hurt your starter because these systems use uniquely designed, more robust starters that are built to withstand the increased frequency of starts and stops, according to Folsom Auto Mall and Green Car Reports. These specialized starters feature materials that promote longevity, such as different brushes and needle bearings, and are optimized to spin slower, reducing motor speed and wear.

How Auto Start/Stop Starters Are Different:
  • Optimized for Slow Rotation:
Start/stop starters are designed to operate more slowly than conventional starters, which reduces the coast-down time after a start and increases their overall lifespan, explains Folsom Auto Mall and Green Car Reports.

  • Long-Life Components:
They use dual-layer or longer-life electric brushes to minimize wear.

  • Needle Bearings:
Instead of oil-impregnated bushings, these starters use needle bearings for enhanced durability, notes Folsom Auto Mall.

  • Advanced Design:
The solenoid is designed to handle repeated on/off cycles, and the entire motor is built with materials that increase longevity.
Overall System Design:

  • Heartier Battery:
The vehicle's battery is also a "heartier" deep-cycle battery, capable of withstanding more frequent draws from the starter, according to Folsom Auto Mall.
  • Engine Components:
Low-friction coatings are applied to the engine's crankshaft and rod bearings to handle the increased load from frequent restarts.

From my reading it seems trucks and base model sedans are often without the system. Most new cars have it.

yeah it's not a big deal that doesn't mean I like it or that is not annoying as hell to me

I honestly can't believe this thread has reached 122 responses. I'm not mad about it. Just shows there are a lot of car nuts in this forum, when the OP was actually a weak ploy to denigrate Democrats. Go car nuts!
