Most of my adult life I’ve worked two jobs. One in public service the other either for a company or, most of my later life, as my own small business.
I didn’t pay into Social Security for the one, I got a pension, but I fully paid into Social Security for the other career. Those in my situation were always entitled to both until the Clinton years when, suddenly, we weren’t.
I worked over 45 years and had been promised “X” for it and between the Social Security going away and the state ripping off part of my pension I was getting considerably less.
Last year Congress passed the “Fairness Act” and Biden signed it into law. Folks like me were suddenly able to get what we had paid into. Just like everyone else who paid into it.
So today I got a check paying me back to January 2024. The date the law set as the date payments would accrue from if eligible, and now I get Social Security just like anyone else who worked and paid into it.
Sometimes it works the way it’s suppose to. You pay into something, you get it.
Now if I could just get the COLA the State of New Jersey (Christie, Sweeney, Oliver) ripped me (and everyone like me) off for and I’d be getting everything my employment stated I was suppose to get at the finish line.
Still, happy to be getting part of it.
Yea!
Side note: it also proves that with enough elbow grease things can get done. “The Fairness Act” only passed because of the efforts of folks put behind it. The Facebook page I was part of coordinating the letter writing and out reach campaign had over 800,000 members, and I’m sure we weren’t the only group. I must of written over 40 letters to Congress folk myself.
Pushing can work. So push for what you believe in and have a right to.
