Your most important point was that prior to the 60's Americans still trusted the government to do the right thing. There's been a lot of water under the bridge since and a lot of lying us into conflicts/wars. Wasn't there just a poll up here on the board recently that 70% of Americans don't trust their government? And damn good reason why, it ain't the good ole days anymore Pero, and it doesn't look like things are getting any better. As American distrust for government has gone up their desire to sacrifice for the cause has gone down.
Yeah, we wouldn't have thrown Japanese people into camps or developed nuclear weapons. That would have been terrible.
Yes there was, if it was a Gallup poll I might have been the one to post it. If not I received it from Gallup. There are a lot of things I distrust our government with and for. But even so, I would do what I did again and again. I think back in my day when my values and thoughts, ideals if you will were shaped it is true, America was a very different place. A lot of it was better and a lot of it was worse. But at least when IKE and JFK were presidents the people in government, congress were for the most part Americans first and Republicans and Democrats later. Today our elected leaders are Republicans and Democrats first and sometimes I am not sure they realize they are Americans too.
Back then America was known as the melting pot of the world. People came here and integrated into American society. Today we are segregated as politicians and parties divide us up into groups and turn us against one another in search for votes. I guess it is called diversity now. Back then as a kid born on a family farm the American dream seemed achievable, today I am not even certain that it exists. Yes, this is a completely different America, in so many thing much better and in so many other things much worse.
Government was small and Washington D.C. might as well have been on Mars for all they had to do with our daily lives. Now everything is top down, government involved in everything we do. We had no gun control, we left our homes unlocked when we went to town and left the car unlocked while in town. There were no school shootings or carjacking, there wouldn't have been any NSA spying or anything like that. Times change, so too does trust in ones own government.
I guess this is the ramblings of an old man, you did give me some things to think about.
Yeah. Let's have the poor folks and minorities do the fighting and the dying. :lamo
:agree: Maybe the general distrust of government will turn out to be a good thing in the long run. I'm seeing the distrust even in young people, so maybe they'll be the ones to correct the imbalance we have now. What we need is another "uniter,"and send the "dividers" somewhere else to go their own way!
Are you kidding me? Japan was helping Germany. THEY were the aggressors. WE were trying to do whatever we could to stay OUT of that war and be peacekeepers, until they attacked Pearl Harbor.
The facts of the matter are simple. We have started wars with other nations for far, far less than what we did to Japan. An embargo and sanctions are acts of war.
The thing you are ignoring is that we could have just NOT done the sanctions at all. That is our way of trying to avoid a war. Some of these piddly little countries are run by tards. They make threats, and in the case of Japan, some action had to be taken, so by sanctions we were trying to avoid the war. IF they weren't such tards, we wouldn't have to be involved in the FIRST place, which is why we are FORCED into the daddy role in most circumstances. It's for world peace.
Oh my god, what a rudely naive perspective. You still have a round face but you'll learn in time.
Here's some reading material for you. You will see how Roosevelt, through deceit, intrigue and manipulation, worked to persuade a country that was 80% against involvement in another war to accept the fight. Japan was provoked to strike us, which gave Roosevelt his war. And there's plenty more where this came from.

Japan was helping the Germans. PERIOD. That's all I need to know.
Ok, sure.
Hey, if you'd rather side with the Japanese and Germans, by all means. I side with America. WE were not wrong for doing what we did. We had to do SOMETHING.
Prosecute them, but no prison time. I can't stand for throwing even more folks into our overcrowded prisons for something draft-related in peace time.
a draft is contrary to a free society
Sure Chris. So the 80% of Americans that OPPOSED getting involved in WW2 were siding with the Japanese and Germans, then again, Hitler did make Times man of the year in 1936!
Our blockade of Japan's oil route in WestPac prior to.
A third party , the United Nations should be handling these problems, NOT one self-elected nation, even us.Don't place the sanctions, embargoes or blockades unless you have been personally attacked. One provocation usually leads to another.
So we have placed strangling sanctions on Iran. They'd bitch slap us like Japan did, if they could. Now suppose Iran pulled a blockade on us, what do you suppose would be our response? We'd Pearl Harbour them wouldn't we, and you would be defending it.
With all the spying the government and the age of computers does why do we need to still register for the draft? I think the law should be repealed. Besides I think a draft should only be legal should a country attack ours first without provocation.

With today's technology do you really think a draft registration is necessary? It shouldn't take a math genius to figure out that if a SS number has been used to for 18 years then that person is draft age.Ok with that said, do you think people should still register so when that other country attacks the government knows who they can draft?
I assume if another country attacks they are not going to give a "time out" to get a draft registration ready and implemented.
