A president should understand that there are things that a president can't joke about, that his words (should) carry weight. If you make a joke about Canada, I can roll my eyes, maybe even laugh with you, and get on with my day.

A US president "joking" about Canada can influence stock markets, drive policy, or make a corporation decide not to build that plant or invest in our country. There is a much greater opportunity for consequences.

So while it might just be shits and giggles and Trump being a comedian for you, real people, who have done nothing to you, are impacted.

What i find weird about Trump supporters is that you spend half your time demanding he be taken seriously, the other half telling everyone not to worry, he's just "joking".

Sorry, I don't have a Trump-speak decoder ring. When he tells a kajillion ties, constantly, how is an honest person to when he's serious? It's a serious question. I think many of his supporters just take him at his word on crazy shit he says that they agree with, and dismiss the things that they don't agree with as jokes. I get what you're saying. I don't even reject it. I'm just offering by way of counterpoint that a lot of us New Englanders got ourselves Canadian kin, off road vehicles and snow machines. Please no. I emigrated to Canada to GTF away from the US. I didn't put in all these years getting citizenship just to become part of the US again.

Besides, it's never going to happen. Makes much more sense to toss out NAFTA and make a revised bilateral trade and labor agreement, to allow for the mobility of people as well as goods, as long as the person is a citizen or PR of either country. We just need to ditch Mexico, they are dead weight at this point and no one wants free labor movement from their country. Cartels are taking over there. Canada receives 5% of its goods from Mexico, so who cares.

It's ridiculous how long it takes Americans or Canadians to get status in the other country, when we live right beside each other.
