Should Religion Be Removed From Politics?

It's next to impossible to separate religion from culture and thus the basic precepts of our underlying moral code. However it is common sense that we base our religion on our norms as much as vice-versa. Nobody is foolish enough to believe murder was okay until Moses came back with a rock that said it wasn't for example.

Yet there is a good solid case to be made for not basing laws directly on scripture. Do that and we might as well go back to absolute monarchies or theocratic temple-states.
