https://www.nytimes.com/2017/05/26/opinion/sunday/it-was-forced-on-me-child-marriage-in-the-us.html

When she was a scrawny 11-year-old, Sherry Johnson found out one day that she was about to be married to a 20-year-old member of her church who had raped her.

“It was forced on me,” she recalls. She had become pregnant, she says, and child welfare authorities were investigating — so her family and church officials decided the simplest way to avoid a messy criminal case was to organize a wedding.

So she was. A government clerk in Tampa, Fla., refused to marry an 11-year-old, even though this was legal in the state, so the wedding party went to nearby Pinellas County, where the clerk issued a marriage license. The license (which I’ve examined) lists her birth date, so officials were aware of her age.

Other interesting points:

3,000 minors are married in Texas every year. This isn't just a 'blue law' Meanwhile, consenting adults cannot marry according to state law

New Hampshire republicans killed a bill that would have changed the legal age from 13 to 18, even though the age of consent for sex is 16

In about half of states, there is NO minimum age to marry. A newborn can be married off, with all the responsibilities that come with it (half of their assets etc)

In almost all of these arranged marriages, the groom is in his late 20s or older. This is not young romance

It's supposedly common at that church in Florida for prepubescent girls to be married to hide rapes

The US State Department condemns arranged marriages in other countries as a "human rights abuse"

My point: Hard to believe this country fought against the right of consenting adults to marry for so long, yet this is still going on

I wonder if Kim Davis would've given them the license

I get the feeling this is just a way for you to talk about gay marriage and republicans.

Re: Should 11 year olds be allowed to marry?

No. Signing any legal contract should require being 18.

i wouldn't be surprised if you couldn't understand how 11 year olds being married off to hide rape - notice i mentioned this TWICE - would disgust anyone

however, it's perfectly valid to blame republicans and religion for this, the same culprits behind the consenting adult marriage bans. Apparently consent means nothing to them at any point

in fact, i should have made a 2nd poll to see who approves of child marriage yet opposes gay marriage

ever heard of the Irish "travelers"?

Re: Should 11 year olds be allowed to marry?

sanctity of marriage my ass

why is it always the holy rollers who undermine their own arguments?

Re: Should 11 year olds be allowed to marry?

I choose other. If the two parties can legally consent to sex then they should be able to get married. However if one or both of the parties are under 18 they need parental approval or to be emancipated.

i really don't think 10,000 gypsies who are mostly unemployed are the reason behind these laws persisting in 30 states

it also seems that the vast majority of their underage marriages are in a grey area of consensual - between girls of 16-17 and a 18-19 year old, not totally coercive child-old man marriage

I'm not blind to what the article said or how these things work in the real world, you know. I commented on your intent to start this thread because it was apparent by reading your tone and some of the clues you were throwing throughout that this topic isn't really about the article or even child marriage.

As for child marriage, no, I don't agree with it. I don't have a minimum age for marriage laws in mind because honestly I haven't put much thought into it.

You're accusing me of something i'm not hiding at all. You can argue my "ulterior" motive is invalid (that the republicans and the church are not massive hypocrites for blockading consenting adult marriage while enabling pederast marriage), answer the damn poll question, stay on topic in some other way, or gtfo

Now that you finally did answer the poll, i suggest you choose gtfo until you have put much thought into it

I did answer the poll question in the post you just responded too. I have no idea what the minimum marriage age should be like I don't know what the age of consent should be. Is that not a good enough answer to you? Anyway, the reasons people were against gay marriage has really nothing in common with this issue.

you can read my edit

one thing it certainly seems to have in common, as i already said, is that republicans and the church are in bed together and don't give a damn about the idea of consent - for an 11 year old girl, or for gay adults

here is what the republicans in NH replied with when a 13 year old girl pleaded with them to change the law, so she couldn't be married off as others have: "It's been working for hundreds of years" Incredible

Everyone else, the stick to the topic of the thread. Do not make personal comments.

One more thing Chromium, since you made the thread and you did mention "holy rollers who undermine their own arguments" that too may be discussed. Your own fault for saying it. If you didn't want people to challenge you on it then you shouldn't have brought it up.

These laws exist in both red and blue states, so I don't see how you can blame it all on republicans. I don't know why these laws aren't changing or why there appears to be resistance to changing them nor do I think you do.

Re: Should 11 year olds be allowed to marry?

What are we to make of a government that will not let 16 year olds consent to sex but will allow 11 year olds to consent to marriage?

Nothing good is the answer.

I see we have a liberal here still fighting the homosexual marriage battle after the armistice has been signed

That form of sexual perversion has been made legal by the unelected judges so why keep the arguement going now?

Look at Mac... demonstrating again that he is putting his own opinionated spin on how to define homosexuality. Do try to deal with facts, Mac, rather than your own silly bigoted opinions.

I do not respond to arguements from this person though he desperately wants me to.

You didn't make an argument. You said something really dumb and opinionated and attempted to present it as fact, labeling homosexuality as a form of sexual perversion. I corrected you and pointed out your silly error. Let's hope I don't have to do it again.

I've explained this to you before. You don't get to decide who can respond to your posts. Don't say really dumb things about sexual orientation, and you won't find me responding to you. Say really dumb things about sexual orientation and I WILL correct you.
