According to Kelly Loeffler, small businesses are OK with Trump's "short term pain", but then she is a member of the Trump admin, so lies are expected.

But the reality? Here, at least one small business owner is saying they would not be able to survive in the short term. She makes planners that sell for ~$60 and in order to survive the tariffs, she would need to charge ~$120 for them. She does not believe customers will buy them at that price, and she is suing the Trump admin for misusing his power with tariffs.

She said when she started, she tried to use US manufacturing for her planners, but it simply did not work out because it wasn't efficient and the quality was poorer.

And she is not alone.

This is going to crush small businesses. I'm sure farmers will get a bailout and big tech is being spared the tariffs but I bet nothing will be done to help these guys.

Somehow, "short-term" lack a definition in this context.

w/o drastic actions, too many farmers will go bankrupt over the next year as a direct result of tariffs

small businesses will fold

multinationals will scoop up any distressed assets worth owning

the Trump family will piss off to a foreign country with the donations Trump extorted for tariff carve outs

they'd best get on with it if they want to help smaller farms
time's a wasting

If Trump wants to give the bail outs to big multi-nationals who have "donated", he can wait until after the small farmers go bust

I agree, I am hoping the Tariffs are not intended to increase government revenue, but to get other countries
to agree to no tariffs.

Trump has expressed many times that he would like to replace income tax with tariffs.

So, I'd not bet the farm on it.

Trump suggests tariffs could replace income tax

Too many Trump supporters think that Trump is as smart as they are.
But Trump is actually as foolish as he seems.
The Emperor really is naked.

Trump seems a bit confused about how tariffs actually work.
Trump also said that foreign countries would pay the tariffs instead of Americans.
Hard to have faith in a guy who seems to lack a basic understanding of what a tariff is and how it works.
But folks are out here doing the impossible

People need to read how tariffs worked out for Spain in the 1600's (It did not work).

Her ‘business math’ makes no sense. Why would the addition of an $18 tariff require her to add $60 to the retail price of a planner? Somehow, she feels entitled to make (demand) an additional $42 in profit based on the addition of an $18 tariff.

Donald's economic meddling has produced an economic mess. It wasn't well thought out nor vetted. More of his shooting from the hip disaster economics.

What's funny is Sam Walton and a bunch of really rich CEOs are the ones that moved manufacturing and made sure they bought cheap products from china. Tons of those people were republicans.

The tariffs seem to be working just fine for the guy who keeps taking meetings with donors who want exemptions
If the goal was to make Donald the center of attention, then it has been a fantastic success.

Again. There was no emergency. Donald does not have the power to impose tariffs. Only in an emergency can he do that. Congress has that power. Congress needs to reign him in, but he has Congress under his thumb. It's a bad situation for America and the world. It was caused because his cult support is emotional and not fact based.

Excuse me, all; but the idea of the short term pain for long term gain is not at all new. It has been used in the United States many times in the past. It has been used in many, many nations in the past. Maybe all nations at one time or another. Armed conflict is one very important example. And do not try to state that armed conflict isn't a part of the equation, because many sectors suffer economically for the cause of a given armed conflict.

was any of this in contention?

I don't have access to her accounting so I can't tell you how she comes up with the prices. I also don't run a business selling products.

Tons of small businesses will file for bankruptcy during the Trump administration. Many of them will be Republican run.

You don't have to go that far back or look at another country. Just look at our own and the Smoot-Hawley tariffs during the 1930s.

Good question. I'm not sure. There must be some reason this thread/topic has garnered so much attention.

I think what is in question is whether there will be "gain" at the end of the season.

How to define "season"? Not sure how.

But a good question.

And if you really want to get into history, look at how the Brits were able to handle the new "united states" before we actually had a central government. The Brits were winning the war all over again. With tariffs.

There do not seem to be enough reasons to trust Trump on this.

That’s the part that does not work! When you remove the incentive to create and innovate to stay ahead of your competitors, you lose the race.
This is what happened in Spain. Machine weave products outpaced and under priced the home made goods even with the tariffs in place, and the Spanish mills closed. The tariffs protected nothing.

This is all just too insane.

Suing Trump problally isn't the best business strategy.
