Sheila Jackson Lee loses Houston mayor’s race to Texas state senator

Texas state Sen. John Whitmire defeated Congresswoman Sheila Jackson Lee on Saturday night to win the Houston mayor’s race in a battle between two Democrats where rising crime played a central role in the election.
Whitmire, endorsed by the local police union, significantly outspent Jackson Lee in the runoff election to lead America’s fourth most populous city. He vowed to fight crime and make the violence-wary city safer.
“What we have to do is hold violent offenders accountable, help the nonviolent offenders turn their lives around. I have a very clear record of being tough and smart on crime,” Whitmire said.

Jackson Lee lost despite endorsements from liberal luminaries like Hillary Clinton and Nancy Pelosi and was hurt by a controversy over a leaked tape showing her berating a staffer.

Her comments likely put a large hole in her campaign boat.

Maybe it was her kiss-of-death endorsements from Hillary & Nutty Nancy that did her in.

It is illusory that the crime rate has fallen. It's like saying the DA in Los Angeles has single-handeldly decreased the crime rate through his innovative crime measures and not mentioning he refuses to add the separate gun charge and is being sued over it with the case lagging a year and a half, not prosecuting violent felonies when the perpetrators are "of color", the police knowing all this and just not making arrests or bothering to investigate because they know the case will not be taken, etc.

You have provided no evidence for what you are claiming.

It is when AI makes up shit out of the blue. The unfortunate reality is people are lazy. Students are lazy and will let AI write their term papers. Teachers are lazy and will not verify the student's bibliography. The state of scholarship is going to go downhill fast.

Things like ChatGPT are currently the worst they will ever be.

The claim that crime has fallen in Houston because District Attorneys aren't prosecuting crime and not arresting people is a complex issue with no simple answer. While there has been a decrease in crime in Houston, it's important to consider various factors that may have contributed to this decline.

Here's a breakdown of the available information:

Evidence supporting the claim:

  • Decreased arrests: Some data suggests a decline in arrests in Houston. According to the Houston Chronicle, arrests for violent crimes declined by 17% between 2019 and 2022.
  • Reduced prosecutions: Some claim that certain District Attorneys in Texas have pursued less aggressive prosecution strategies, leading to fewer convictions and potentially emboldening criminals.
  • Shift in priorities: Some argue that law enforcement agencies may have shifted their focus away from certain crimes, leading to lower reported crime rates.
Shift in priorities.
They need to arrest all those women wanting an abortion

That is great news to learn about Lee's campaign failure.
That should have happened in Chicago but the people there are too dumb to realize crime is a major issue in big cities.

How about focusing on the subject of the OP?

Is Lee still in Congress?
Yes Lee is still in the US House. The 73 year old granny did not resign her seat to run for mayor, nor would anyone be required to.

The Democratic primary in TX is in March and Lee filed before the deadline of 6pm today. Lee had her renomination papers for Congress ready to go, for the Nov. 5th general next year.

Lee finished a distant second in the mayoral primary to Saturday's winner and who blew her out Saturday 64% - 38% so Lee was plenty ready to file for Congress today. In '22 Lee got 70% in the general.

Her white gal opponent in the primary is a former Lee staff member, is an at large Houston city councilor and enjoys $1m in cash ready to go in the deeply blue district where the primary winner has a cakewalk in November. Granny Lee has $231,000 for the March primary as of now and probably a million bucks worth of name recognition and another million bucks in goods delivered since being elected in '96.

If a representative or a Senator or any other elected official,)is going to run for another office, they should have to resign whatever office they are serving. You cannot governwhile you campaign for another job, imo!

She has always been seen as disrespectful to her staff members and she lives one clock from her office she insists on being driven to work. Good riddance.

Thank goodness. In addition to being venal, cerebral titan Sheila Jackson Lee is a dumb as a box of hair.

She's another poster child for term limits.
Alas, her losing the mayoral contest means she will return to Congress. She has already filed, of course, and the Fifth Ward will probably stupidly support her again.

I will say this about She-Jack. She works her tail off at campaigning, and flogs/browbeats/abuses staff to do the same. She takes every opportunity to get in front of the camera. And she's one of those nice to your face people that you just don't want to deal with getting on the bad side of. If she actually turned some of that energy toward doing something productive, she could be a force for change.

In the general and runoff elections, she had a team of people at the boundary of the polling place campaigning for her, in campaign tshirts, stopping everyone on the way in. They also apparently rotated through just standing by the door until the election judge shooed them away. She had a team going.

I don't think anyone actually likes her, but she's in a very safe district. She has name recognition and local influence, and no one with influence dares to run against her in the primary. She'll probably be right in that congressional seat unless she decides to leave.
