New Shadow Shaping technology creates images on the moon that can be seen from Earth. Robots are used to create several small ridges in the lunar dust over large areas that capture shadows and shape them to form logos, domains names or memorials.

Later in 2009, this company will auction off over 40 sections of the moon that it has created to the highest bidders.

How is this permissible, that one company gets control over the moon?

When does the madness end?

Whats more unusual is that people already own parts of the moon and I'm betting that none of these guys are going to get their permission before doing this.

I could not possibly accept this happening.

I hope all involved have kidney failure.

Possession is 9/10ths of the law, allegedly.

How are they gonna get there?

It's BS.

I've got some pretty good idea's about it and also there is some sort of x challenge or something like that which involves private parties sending automated vehicles to the moon and making a round trip on the surface sending pictures the whole time.

I think it has a $5 million prize for first place.

The Big Picture|Moon Publicity

Their promo message is just a bunch of corporate lies. They don't want to go into space for the betterment of mankind, they want to do it for profit and personal gain.

I can think of many more virtuous reasons to enter space that don't involve defiling something as timeless and sacred as the moon itself. I hope the law prevents these people from succeeding. If they want to advertise from space, they can do it another way that doesn't involve permanent damage to the lunar surface.

Their arrogance also presumes that corporate capitalism will always exist and therefore, in 500 years, humans will want to be staring at the same crappy logos. Not to mention, it presumes that everyone in the world wants to see their crap.

The profit motive tends to lead to more betterment of mankind than most other motivations. See Capitalism for further information.

Sacred?

I could argue that any square mile of the Earth's surface is more "sacred" than the entire Moon, because Earth's surface harbors Life and the Moon is sterile.

Having said that, no I don't want to see the Wal-Mart logo on the moon in hundred-mile long letters. I just don't think that portraying the moon as sacred and dissing the profit motive is the way to put the kaibosh on that particularly garish bit of advertising. The first Homeowners Association on the Moon will probably stop that with a simple advertising ban.

It's not just the moon, either.

I've heard several people on this forum talking about owning uranus.

"All Uranuses are belong to us!"

Calling it sacred is a valid argument, because to many societies it is. In most Asian countries, their festivals and holy days are based on the moon cycle. The Chinese calendar, for example, is lunar based. How great would it feel for those people to one day look up at their ancient and spiritual symbol, and see it littered with visual garbage from the Western world?

Why does one company from the United States get to decide what it is used for? It shouldn't just be a matter of who can get there first. The laws here on earth need to consider what the moon means to everyone... but then again, I do realize that this kind of advanced, sentient thinking would require people to rise well above the level of stupidity they usually operate at, so my hopes are low.

In any case, I'm sure the company is a hoax now. Their site looks like it was made using blog software, maybe to encourage thinking about the future.

Moon ain't timelss, people're brief.

I think tampon companies should be allowed to advertise on the moon.

Let's be clear. By "moon," can we assume that you mean the astronomical body, and not an act with a body part?
