Sesame Street heads to Netflix after Trump pulled funding

The reason is to provide content that is useful but not profitable, to everyone, free of corporate influence / obligation.

Sesame street, as the example, has been a wonderful aid in preschool teaching as long as it has existed, and it could be seen in every house with a TV. It didn't have to make a profit, it could just teach, without having to plug a toy or a cereal or whatever.

Now that content is behind a Netflix subscription, making it out of reach for all the kids in households that can't afford one, which is ironic because they're likely the kids that could use this the most.

I find it contradictory that as a teacher you don't see the value lost here. Should libraries and museums be defunded next?
The Sesame Street corporate arm sells branded toys, videos and other logo merchandise producing millions in revenue annually. The pay per view contracts aren't free. Of course none of filthy lucre from from Sesame street corporate revenue is used to compensate PBS and the US taxpayer.

I note the Canadian flag on your user profile. Do you support a multimillion dollar annual subsidy for Sesame street paid for by Canadian taxpayers?

Absolutely. We spend a lot of money on public broadcasting at the federal and provincial level in Ontario (CBC and TV Ontario).

PBS doesn't need Federal funding to survive.

Great, which subdidized public broadcasting in Canada should be cut to subsidize Sesame Street? It's in its 50th season so Canada owes a lot in back payments.

We bought the rights to air it in the seventies. What, you think we're up here pirating sesame street? Lol

Youtube content is profit driven and contains ads unless you pay for a subscription, so it's not an equivalent.

So? It's free educational content for consumers. The value in the program was immense when it first started because there wasn't anything like it on TV at that time. But now there are thousands of things just like it that kids can watch for free, so it's not a big deal for the federal government to not provide 17% of their budget now, IMO.

Why don't you think libraries and museums shouldn't be defunded?

Because there aren't other places to check out books for free, that I'm aware of.

Musuems are unique like libraries because they hold historical artifacts that cannot be viewed elsewhere.

It's a preschool show. 🤷‍♂️

Sorry, is this an attempt in invalidate the positive impact of sesame street? Hehe... that's a tough row to hoe.

And? There are preschool shows and videos that my kids talk about, like NumberBlocks, Cocomelon, Peppa Pig, Storyblocks. Sesame Street was hugely popular when I was a kid, but it just isn't as much anymore. Maybe putting it on Netflix will bring back a resurgence of it.

So, you're good with advertising to kids?

I guess we agree to disagree then.

And where else can kids get commercial free educational content at no cost on par with what your investment in public broadcasting has been able to do?

Sorry, i guess i just don't understand the hate around sesame street. It's one of the greatest American success stories when judged by its results. It's broadcast to around 140 countries. You should be proud of it.

Partisanship is such a self defeating force.

Yep, and Sesame Street is pretty unique too. I'm sorry you can't see it, it's one of the few things you have left to brag about in 2025.

And? The fact that a high quality show is losing ratings to more commercial options is a reason to put more investment in it, not less.

Why not?

Because Sesame Street is in the way of MAGAs dictating how other peoples' children will be raised.

Nah, if I trace this story back, it appears this is just another example of Trump getting back at anyone or anything that didn't bend the knee, sesame street is just a casualty.

But, of course, his loyal followers will twist themselves into pretzels to demonize it anyway, despite the fact that it's one of the better contributions you've made to society and something you should all be proud of.

Yep. Sesame Street, Mr Rogers, and your Electric Company.

I don't hate Sesame Street. It's a great program. I just don't think the federal government needs to give money to it. It can and will go on without taxpayer money.

I've never understood the federal funding of TV or radio networks/programs. PBS will be fine without their less than 20% federal funding.
And oil companies?

By the way, I don’t think in my 20 years of teaching I have ever heard a kid talk about watching Sesame Street.

So? It doesn’t mean they weren’t watching it. I never talked to my teachers about what books I was reading at home or that I was watching Captain Kangaroo and Romper Room.

If it's still around after Trump it will receive funding again. Hopefully it doesn't lose too much of its original value through the compromises it will have to make to stay afloat.

But, I guess I understand your position. Tax cuts for billionaires is way more important than educating children. In fact, imagine all the tax cuts they could enjoy if only kids who could fund their own education attended school. I think getting rid of all the waste spent on publicly funding schools should be looked at next. Surely you don't need all these teachers living off the government teat. Yeah, I think you're onto something here, Josie.

Oh, c'mon yourself. You're literally the only teacher i have ever met that doesn't support sesame street.

Ai yi yi. I DO support Sesame Street. LOL!
