Senate blocks Trump-backed plan to end government shutdown and fund his border wall

Declare an emergency and build the wall without congress. Delaying this is dumb. It's going to go to the courts no matter what, so you may as well do it now.

If Trump thought he had any chance at all of building his wall as a national emergency he would have done it a month ago. I can't imagine any other resolution though. He's going to have to let it fail in the courts and then blame the judges.

the democrats aren't in control of the senate...the Republicans are....so this is McConnell and Trump that own this....just as the government employees that I am talking to daily...including a DEA agent in the field, risking her life, not getting paid.

and you are wrong. the majority of republicans voted for the bill to pass it. which proves they are interested in border security can getting people back to work.
schumer and the clowns in the democrat side are the ones that voted against it except for a few people.

it shows that they are not interested in border security or getting people back to work and ending the shut down.
schumer owns it since he is the one that filibustered the bill. he didn't have to filibuster the bill.

they could have held a regular vote and passed it.

then she should blame schumer for not passing the bill which would have allowed her to get paid.

No ... it only proves they are pawns of a president who is both ignorant and incompetent and expert the nation to bail out his sorry ass for a campaign promise made to a xenophobic and racist base in order to try and win an election.

The Senate blocked a GOP-backed bill to fund the government and President Donald Trump's border wall Thursday. As voting continued, the measure was set to fail to get the 60 votes needed to advance as Republicans could not get seven Democrats to back it.

The chamber will next vote on a separate Democratic proposal to fund the government through Feb. 8 without money for the barrier. The Senate is also expected to oppose that plan.

Democrats and some Republicans in the Senate have urged Trump to temporarily reopen the government while the White House and Congress negotiate a broader immigration deal. Trump has insisted on securing funding for the wall before he agrees to fund the government.

This is starting to get stupid. Trump won't sign anything without his boarder funding, the Senate won't pass anything that has his boarder funding in it.

What do about dumb situation?

Its border, not boarder. Boarder is someone you rent a room to...

Every bill that comes into the senate has to have a cloiture vote. This is a vote to end a debate on a bill.
usually it requires 50 votes unless someone filibusters. if someone filibusers then it requires 60 votes to end debate.

it used to be that filibustering bills was a major thing as all action on the senate floor stopped until a resolution was completed.
Robert byrd changed the rules so that the senate could continue with other bills.

once the debate has ended all it requires is a 51 vote majority to pass a bill.

It wont matter...the Senate cant make laws without the House

The majority are only intrested in the wall and Trump, not border security. If they were interested in Border Security, they wouldnt be denying paychecks to a vulnerable Border Patrol....desperation makes them vulnerable to bribing

by passing the bill it would have gone to the house. at the point the house would have made changes and it would have
gone to committee for them to has out a bill that might have worked.

schumer blocked the bill. it proves he is not interested in border security nor getting 600k paid.

same goes for pelosi for blocking the bill.
and not passing it. it proves they are not interested in border security or getting people back to work.
they are only interested in politics.

you evidenlty didn't read. Democrats shut the government down and have kept it shut down for the past 30 days.
if you notice most of the republicans voted for the bill and except for the filibuster they would have passed it.

Trump said he shut it down...and he did...he refused to sign the budget

they passed a bill that would get them paid schumer blocked the bill.
what part of this is lost on you? what part of this do you simply not get or understand?

it isn't that hard to figure out.

HE hasnt actually been sent a bill so we dont know what he will or wont sign when he is forced to. The Senate and House should pass a bill and see what he actually does. So far all he has done is talk.

Trump said he shut it down...and he did...he refused to sign the budget

no schumer filibustered the bill that would have opened and kept government going. he has done it multiple times now.
the president can't sign a bill that isn't on his desk. in order for the bill to get to his desk
congress has to pass it.

you seriously don't know how government works do you?

Trump said he shut it down...and he did...he refused to sign the budget

There was no bill to sign. No bill passed both houses in the same form. There is no veto on record. Trump has not actually vetoed a single bill since taking office. So really, Trump didnt shut it down, congress did by not passing appropriations back in March, and then not passing appropriations in December. If anything, all Trump did was threaten and congress folded.

In a game of chicken, I would put my money on Trump not being the first to blink. I don't think he really cares. Most former Presidents cash in on their legacy after they leave office. Trump doesn't need that. If this thing all goes to hell and his approval rating drops to zero he still has Trump Tower and towers of cash to go back to.

I don't think enough GOP voters really thought this thing through during the nomination process...

Anytime you want to understand Trump's thinking, you should always preface it with "Trump, an utterly despicable human being....". Trump doesn't care because he doesn't care about anyone but himself. 800,000 federal workers could have their credit ruined or worse, and he doesn't care because he is a despicable human being. I was born in 76 and he is the only president in my entire lifetime you could say that about.

As to this shutdown. It started when the Republicans had total control of Washington. For the first 2 years of Trump's presidency, the Republicans had total control of Washington. Now, you might say "But they needed 60 votes to pass funding for Trump's wall". That is no true though. Had they actually wanted to fund Trump's wall, they could have used budget reconciliation to do so, which would have only required a simple majority vote, and there is nothing the Democrats could have done about it.

I was discussing this same point yesterday. Truly baffling how this didn't get done within the first six months or so. Maybe he didn't have enough Republicans on board? Who knows but this was one of the pillars of his campaign, he had majorities in the house and the senate, and he's supposed to be "the deal maker".

There is no excuse for the place we're in right now.

Don't you just love how they lead with "The senate blocked the GOP-backed bill" When the reality is to get it past the filibuster they needed at a minimum 7 Democrats senators to vote for it and they only got 1. So should it say Democrats stay united in saying NO to the GOP-backed bill to fund the government with only 1 defection.

Mr. Trump has now successfully concluded his successful negotiations and successfully convinced the Legislative Branch to present him with legislation that he could, in good faith and without abandoning his principled stand, sign.

Another BIGLY YUGE WIN for Mr. Trump.

(At least that's what the tweets are saying it is."

Mr. Trump's position was "The government WILL NOT reopen without money for 'The Wall'.".

Ms. Pelosi's position was "The government WILL reopen without money for 'The Wall'.".

The government HAS reopened.

To determine who "won" simply check to see if that reopening WAS in conjunction with money for 'The Wall' or not.

If there IS money for 'The Wall' coupled with the reopening of the government then, regardless of what anyone says to the contrary, Mr. Trump won.

If there IS NOT money for 'The Wall' coupled with the reopening of the government then, regardless of what anyone says to the contrary, Ms. Pelosi won.
