From a NY Post exclusive:

The woman serving a life sentence for the 1995 murder of Tejano icon Selena has filed paperwork to try to get released next year, as inmates tell The Post there’s “a bounty on her head” behind bars.

A rep at the Texas Department of Criminal Justice said killer Yolanda Saldívar, now 64, has no blemishes on her record that will keep the parole board from holding a hearing in March to determine whether to release her.

...Selena believed that Saldívar, a founder of her fan club, had embezzled more than $60,000, and the singer was planning to fire her.

...“I was convicted by public opinion even before my trial started,” Saldívar said in a prison interview for last year’s Peacock documentary: “Selena and Yolanda: The Secrets Between Them.”

She maintained that she had meant to kill herself, not Selena, at the time. https://nypost.com/2024/12/29/us-ne...-as-inmates-reveal-theres-bounty-on-her-head/

Saldivar isn't safe even in gen pop at Gatesville, but she is far safer than she will be if granted parole. I think she's right where she needs to be.

Saldivar is where she needs to be and will have a bounty wherever she goes.

Yes, she will, even if she remains in hiding. Passions run strong and haven't diminished over the years, and her life isn't worth the proverbial plugged nickel on the streets.

It’s convenient that she added “at the time”. ;)

To which I can add only "Sure, Jan."

A little Tejano music goes a long way for me (ditto Zydeco although I do love it), but Serena was talented and adored. People still mourn her loss. Not sure that her murderer understands that, but I'm quite sincere in expecting that should she be released on parole, she is as good as dead.

A very good summary of the case for those unfamiliar: https://www.aetv.com/real-crime/selenas-death-yolanda-saldivar

The banter at the beginning of the video is translated to "Thank you very much. Are you enjoying yourself? [Here's] another song for couples." Lyrics in English below the link:

At the time of her death, Selena Quintanilla-Pérez was making the transition from Spanish-language songs to English language songs.

Nevertheless, she was a huge talent in either language and is missed.

Oh, yes. Such a talent, and only 23. Her last performance was in my community, and even today grown men have tears in their eyes when this tragedy is mentioned. A whole generation of little girls now all grown up, and they were all just crazy about her.

I have to be honest. Prior to this thread I'd never even heard of Selena.

In any case, Saldivar has served over 29 years and is eligible to file for parole next year after she reaches 30 years confinement. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Yolanda_Saldívar

However, there is no guarantee she would receive it.

I'm glad I began this thread then if only to introduce you to Selena.

The film about her made JLo a star, and as Rogue Valley noted, she was just crossing over into the mainstream. From her Wiki entry:

Selena's murder had a widespread impact. Reactions to her death were compared to those following the deaths of musicians John Lennon and Elvis Presley and that of U.S. president John F. Kennedy.Major television networks interrupted their regular programming to break the news—Tom Brokaw referred to Selena as "The Mexican Madonna".Her death was front-page news in The New York Times for two days. Many vigils and memorials were held in her honor, and radio stations in Texas played her music non-stop. Her funeral drew 60,000 mourners, many of whom traveled from outside the United States.

...An issue of People magazine was released several days after her murder. Its publishers believed interest would soon wane. They released a commemorative issue within a week when it became clear it was growing. The issue sold nearly a million copies, selling the entire first and second print runs within two weeks. It became a collector's item, a first in the history of People. Betty Cortina, an editor of People, told Biography they never had an issue that was completely sold out; "it was unheard of". https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Selena

Yeah FU*K that bitch. No parole. She can rot in her cell.

Selena's crossover English language hit on her "Dreaming Of You" album, released posthumously after her death.

"I Could Fall in Love" is a pop ballad with R&B, soul and soft rock influences. It has an ethereal quality.

There's a green light on her but just no one's managed to get to her for thirty years?

Huh.

She shouldn’t receive any parole. She needs to rot in a cell
As @Captain Adverse has observed, she is indeed going to be eligible for parole, and she has been a good girl during her incarceration at Gatesville. But I truly doubt that she would be alive today if she were in the general population there. And I also truly doubt that she will remain alive very long if she is granted parole. She is much safer in the controlled environment of a prison.

She killed and stole from a sincere friend. She deserves to rot

She shot at Selena's back. She is a crook, a self-serving liar, and a cowardly murderer.

But no worries; wherever she is, Saldivar is going to rot.

Oh believe me I will cry no tears. I was the same age as Selena Quintanilla. Her husband wasn’t well liked by her father, but he loved Selena and still mourns her death.
