A second hack into the State Dept was discovered Tuesday. They know now it was a second attack. This one is even more intrusive than the first. Even with us accusing the Chinese and their denial this took place. What say ye?

The federal Office of Personnel Management may have been hit by a second data breach that gave hackers access to an entirely different, and potentially more damaging, set of data, officials said Friday.

The stolen files are believed to have included highly sensitive information from forms filled out by people applying for jobs that require security clearances. Called Form 86, these 127-pages questionnaires ask about mental illnesses, drug and alcohol problems, criminal and arrest records and financial data for both the applicant and sometimes their family members, friends and contacts.

That, in turn lead to OPM discovering a possible second breach on Tuesday, said Samuel Schumach, OPM press secretary.....snip~

Who would have guessed that Healthcare.gov wouldn’t turn out to be the biggest tech disaster of the Obama presidency?

The agency that just had millions of employee records hacked by China didn’t have an IT security staff until 2013; Update: Millions more military and intel records exposed in second hack. The OPM had no IT security staff until 2013, and it showed. The agency was harshly criticized for its lax security in an inspector general’s report released last November that cited its lack of encryption and the agency’s failure to track its equipment. Investigators found that the OPM failed to maintain an inventory list of all of its servers and databases and didn’t even know all the systems that were connected to its networks. The agency also failed to use multi-factor authentication for workers accessing the systems remotely from home or on the road.

But four people familiar with the investigation said the breach was actually discovered during a mid-April sales demonstration at OPM by a Virginia company called CyTech Services, which has a networks forensics platform called CyFIR. CyTech, trying to show OPM how its cybersecurity product worked, ran a diagnostics study on OPM’s network and discovered malware was embedded on the network. Investigators believe the hackers had been in the network for a year or more......snip~

This time they got Social Security Numbers and background info on friends and family members. All from that form. Now we find out they didn't even know how many servers and databases they had to cover. What say ye?

I would say, what I said when a low grade sergeant like Manning or a contractor like Snowden to access so much info they should not have had access to. Fire every person in the line of command in shame. Obviously the architecture of the soft and hardware is so sloppy that it is grave negligence.

Heya Jog. :2wave: They got peoples Soc Security Numbers this time. Their family members too. Over 14 Million affected and that's at this point. This is serious and BO can't downplay it now.

Deeply personal information submitted by U.S. intelligence and military personnel for security clearances mental illnesses, drug and alcohol use, past arrests, bankruptcies and more — is in the hands of hackers linked to China, officials say.

In describing a cyberbreach of federal records dramatically worse than first acknowledged, authorities point to Standard Form 86, which applicants are required to complete. Applicants also must list contacts and relatives, potentially exposing any foreign relatives of U.S. intelligence employees to coercion. Both the applicant's Social Security number and that of his or her cohabitant are required.

"This tells the Chinese the identities of almost everybody who has got a United States security clearance," said Joel Brenner, a former top U.S. counterintelligence official. "That makes it very hard for any of those people to function as an intelligence officer. The database also tells the Chinese an enormous amount of information about almost everyone with a security clearance. That's a gold mine. It helps you approach and recruit spies.".....snip~

....and the media got all their panties in a wad over one (Valerie Plame) "outing". Where is the outrage here?

Greetings, MMC. :2wave:

I thought I had read an article where China said the hacking was not done by them! Someone is not telling the truth here, obviously, but who might a third party be if it comes to that, since several possibilities come to mind? The Chinese just do not seem to be that sloppy and inept that they would get "caught!"

Heya Lady P.

Well they wont admit to it publicly. More importantly is the State Dept getting constantly hacked. All after Hillary steps down, huh?

Do you think people in the MS media should be noticing that?

If they do, it would only to be to tout how very safe we all were when she was SoS, ignoring how her own personal server was hacked, and how many others became targets as a result of corresponding with her! I wonder how Kerry feels lately?

You know what the answer is going to be. They'll say that if only the Republicans had allowed additional funding none of this would have happened.

This is the stuff that happens when government gets too big. They get all bent out of shape over banks that are "too big to fail" but more government is always the answer, right?

He might be wondering how many people Hillary still has in the State Dept, and what would happen if they no longer worked there.

Oh definitely, as we have seen proven so many times!.. :argue: !

Heya Luther. :2wave: What good would the funding do.....if the Demos don't go and use the money for what it is supposed to be used for? Do you think there is any good reason why they didn't have a security team on this?

Looks what happened at State under Hillary. 6 Billion came up missing.

A few more like this one, and they will have the info on every single person on the planet. ;)

You think they'd actually admit it? Those CHICOM pricks are behind it...no doubt.

Dude! We're talking about Democrats! They all believe that you can stop anything if you just plug it up with enough money.

Greetings, Roadvirus. :2wave:

Well, with over a billion in population, there's no doubt that they have the people available to sift through as much data as it takes to find any information of interest to them! But why did it take us a year to discover this security breach? Either it was very well planned, or we're getting very complacent about potential dangers!

Drone strikes for foreign hackers and this for domestic hackers:

Heya Winchester. :2wave: Does that work for a server that was breached and gave up US National Security and placed the Presidency at Risk? Allowed the Russians and Chinese to hack the State dept?

Pretty simple, Pol. When your work force is made up primarily of people who show up, collect a paycheck, and primarily try not to upset their boss so they get promotions and a bigger pension then it's pretty easy to get away with this kind of thing because nobody cares! As long as it doesn't block access to their Facebook or Bejeweled they could really care less. Besides, the golden rule of bureaucrats is "If it isn't your job then don't do it."

No only the people who steal my personal data and open up credit cards in my name and on my credit report. Those people and the wall street people responsible for the mortgage/banking crisis should all die.

And this is the same entity, the federal government, that thinks they have a better idea as to how to run the Internet? :lamo

Sorry. With as many technology projects and efforts they've blown, they've no credibility. Come back when you own house is in order.

....and the media got all their panties in a wad over one (Valerie Plame) "outing". Where is the outrage here?

But of course not. What ARE you thinking? After all, Obama's presidency is the greatest.

You know what the answer is going to be. They'll say that if only the Republicans had allowed additional funding none of this would have happened.

Indeed. Spot on. Blame shift. It's all Obama and his admin have left, as if they had anything, such as responsibility, to begin with.

Yep EB. :2wave: Same government that thinks they know how to run the internet. We might be able to get that house in order if they tell Hillary up that server that allowed them to gain access.
