I'd say about half of my Glocks are refurbished police auction firearms. I'm not looking for 'throw-away'...Ive just always looked for good deals on my firearms.
In the (happily) unlikely event that I will ever actually have to shoot someone as a civilian, I'd be fine if my weapon were held for evidence.
I had an interaction with the FBI many years ago. I had just returned from a deployment to Saudi Arabia a few days prior when my kids got a visit from the feds. It was actually kinda funny because there were a house full of teenagers and the kids played it to the hilt, telling everyone their father was wanted by the FBI for murder. Turns out...the killing took place in a neighboring state and it involved a Makarov 9x18 round. I was apparently one of three people that had this particular firearm. I bought it used so there was no record BUT I bought and installed a ported barrel and thats how they traced it (remember kids...none of your gun purchases that are not cash purchases are secure). Anyway...long and short of it...they talked to me...I gave them the firearm for ballistics testing (I had a TS SCI clearance with the AF...it wasnt going to go well for me if I didnt)...they determined it obviously was not the right gun, I got it back about a month later, bought a new replacement barrel (because why take chance after the fed had already had the gun), replaced the barrel...and then sold it about a month later. BTW...I asked if one of the agents would lend me their firearm while they tested mine...no such luck.
