Harry Potter is one of the greats of the modern age. J.K. Rowling rocks and all you mother ****ers that say she practices witchcraft should die a horrible death. Also all you illiterate bitches that say Harry Potter is for 12 year olds should be thrown into the dungeon and then tortured.

I have read Stephen King's "It". I don't care for the HP saga. I don't believe in witchcraft so I woudn't say that J.K. practices it. I am just wondering what brought about your outburst. Do you feel strong enough about it to give your life? You know, like in a war sense?

Actually, too be completely honest, I just felt like being a dick.

I like HP a lot but I dislike all of the hype surrounding it. I think it makes people take it less seriously.

By the way, I've read "It". pretty good book.

The only thing I read for entertainment are comic books everything else I read is educational or informational I think if you can't learn something new from it it's a waste of time.
Who says novels can't be education or informational? In a way, novels reflect human nature better then just describing it or trying to analyze it does. If a good author can pour their heart and mind into a book, from their perspective you see a world as they imagine, as it makes sense to them. And sometimes you find that it can be either better or worse etc.

But of course there are different types of books. Stephen King books are more of entertainment while stuff like Tolkien is linguistic, Orwell is political, Albert Camus is philosopical, and Bernard Cornwell is historical.

Fiction is the best way to understand human nature. Describing things are all that is neccesary for semi-scholarly types who understand a history yet do not understand for what reason. A machine can answer any question in the whole world but it cannot answer the question 'why'? Fiction, directly or indirectly, seek to answer that question. You don't always have to agree but it gives you something to think about.

How "serious" can you take a work of fiction? Either you like it or you don't. It isn't a superstition.

I have no problem with pegans, some of my best friends are pegans. I'm practically pegan myself. I do have a problem with shotty writing being called so brilliant. HP is an obvious clone of better litterature. The fact that kids are reading HP instead of something with substance is shocking. I'm reading the Trumpet and the Swan to my 2 year old daughter, and she is in love with it. If she ever asks for an Harry Potter book, I'll get her one, but I'l also let her know that she'd be better off reading soemthing else. Overrated. Simply overrated.

And yes, I've read one of them (the first one), cover to cover.

Pegan? Never heard of it.

I read practically everything I can get my hands on, as the mood strikes....and I don't care if I'm 23, I love Harry Potter. You may say that it's overrated, but it's pretty hard to write a book, let alone a whole SERIES of books, that children and adults alike can enjoy. You'd be amazed at what is contained within the pages of HP books...all sorts of history and mythology....if you'd just do a little research, you'd be surprised to find out what CAN be learned from the HP books.

I just don't appreciate how people dumb it down to a simple childrens book. First of all Potter is read more by adults then children and secondly its, in my opinion, going to end up being a classic and its kinda annoying for them to dumb it down so much.

If you've read only the first one, then I can understand why you would think it would be overrated. The first two books aren't so great, in my opinion. But the third fourth fifth and sixth books are genius. If you want, you could watch the first and second movies and then skip right ahead and read the rest but don't give up on it. I happened to actually enjoy the first two but its definatly not as interesting as the 3rd, 4th, 5th, and 6th.

I would find that if you discouraged her from reading Harry Potter you would be, and you can take this anyway you want, unfairly influencing her. Just because you did not enjoy it does not mean she will not. I almost didn't read the Lord of the Rings because of my parents and I did and I'm in love with them. So just something to keep in mind.

Why is J.K. killing off all the good characters while the evil ones stay alive or come back from the dead? The way things are going I can see J.K. killing even Harry off in book 7.
