EDINBURGH — Voters in Scotland rejected independence from Britain in a referendum that had threatened to break up the 307-year union between them, according to projections by the BBC and Sky News early Friday.
Before dawn after a night of counting that showed a steady trend in favor of maintaining the union, Nicola Sturgeon, the deputy head of the pro-independence Scottish National Party, effectively conceded defeat for the “yes” campaign that had pressed for secession.
“Like thousands of others across the country I’ve put my heart and soul into this campaign and there is a real sense of disappointment that we’ve fallen narrowly short of securing a yes vote,” Ms. Sturgeon told BBC television.
With 26 of 32 voting districts reporting, there were 1,397,077 votes, or 54.2 percent, against independence, and 1,176,952, or 45.7 percent, in favor.

I think this was the correct decision on behalf of Scotland.
But this should be a big sign that the bridge needs to be repaired or else, the next time this happens, it may collapse.

Well, that certainly makes things a lot simpler.
I think that union is ultimately in the best interests of both Scotland and UK in general. I simply hope that this vote doesn't set the stage for anything worse further down the road.
Yup, I agree. This isnt just a big wake up call for the UK but for Europe as well. Now I only wish America would do the same too-there needs to be some serious political change, not the faux change that Obama voters thought they were having.
Just watched the leader of the Nationalist party, and he said basically the same thing in his speech.
Democracy has spoken.
Respect and credit to all of the voters for the high turnouts and making sure their voices were heard.
Never a doubt.

Just because they voted 'no' this time...doesn't mean they will next time.
In the long run, I am convinced Scotland will leave Great Britain.
I don't really much care either way, but I think it will happen.
I'm sure based, on my interactions with every Scot I've ever met across the globe, the reality of what they were about to do suddenly became clear as they entered the voting booth
Vote Yes: What, you mean, no English to blame for everything?.....Nightmarish

Well it should make the European Commission consider putting forward some sort of legislation regarding what happens if a country splits up.Catalonias' referendum may not turn up this way.
well it's like, you know... what he would say to look good and save some face.
I'm saying it to be a... you know... a smartass.

The entrance to the exit is wide open.
What does this mean to America?
I'm quite happy in the USA and hit the road as much as I can--Eisenhower's Audubons.Anyone who's not happy in the USA always has the option to hit the road.
What if a state wants to leave?

I seriously doubt that Spain will ever permit a referendum on independence to be held in Catalonia.
And I also seriously doubt that Catalonia will ever be able to secede and defeat the Spanish military.
But I could be wrong, let's wait and see, eh?
Just what Europe needs: A second Spanish civil war. I wonder which side Germany will choose this time around.
