Scientists find strongest evidence yet of life on an alien planet

Traveling 50,000 miles per hour how many years would it take to reach that planet?

743,483 years.

50k mph is not exactly warp speed. For comparison, the Voyager 2 probe is traveling around 38k mph.

We can also be "not alone" in the solar system... for example, there may well be life on the same Europe.

Only life does not mean intelligence at all. Bacterial life is not very impressive.

The planet named in the article is a super-earth, more than twice the size of Terra, which is already creating a lot of problems... but more importantly, it is located in a red dwarf system, and these are not the most stable stars, the planet is in the tidal grip of its star, in other words, it is always turned on one side to its star ... all this is very unfavorable for life, especially for complex organics.

So, there's nothing to be happy about yet. We are looking further.
Any life is impressive.

Up until now we were all we knew about.

The Abrahamic religions are based on the premise that we are it. That earth is the only place jahweh made life.

From time to time we learn things that change our worldview forever. This is one of those times.

As science discovers and learns more, the more god/s become an ever shrinking box of ignorance.

It is far too far away to ever have direct impact on Earth
If life is proven to exist elsewhere it changes our fundamental understanding of the universe.

At this point we are officially the only planet in the universe that harbors life.

That may be about to change.

But Abrahamics believe we are it.

And are prone to violence when somebody claims otherwise.

??? okay---and what would that do?? Anyone who thinks that there is no life out there cannot be rational. It would be a pretty big waste of space !!

Billions of people disagree.

I’ve always been with the odds. It would be weird if there was no other life.

It has been said even by many scientists even by Stephan Hawkins we should cease searching for intelligent life because chances are greater it would be hostile than peaceful. Considering nearly all the lifeforms aquatic, in the air and on the ground kill each other I think it is good advice.

Yes, people can be quite irrational. Some prefer belief over actual fact or reality and react negatively when their belief is challenged. History demonstrates this quite well too.

Any time a highly advanced civilization has encountered a less developed one it hasn't gone well for the little guy.

Or perhaps an advanced species would be advanced and enlightened enough to not he hostile? I wonder if the same can be said of humanity if we actually did discover intelligent exolife?

That may be true of our own species. We can't say for certain that would be the same of another. Consider Star Trek: First contact. Would we engage in dialog with another species? Or try to conquer or exploit them? I would think we'd try to establish a relationship. But then, I tend (or try) to be optimistic about it.

That is true. Probability alone deems there is likely exolife out there. Even intelligent exolife. It is a big universe after all.

He also said that no life would ever get so advanced that they could travel space to any degree. He said they would either kill eachother off before they got that far, or the planet would use up all it's resources and the life-form would die.....

Well... that's subjective.
My worldview won't change in any way, even if we discover other intelligent life... moreover, I will not be impressed by the evidence of a different bacterial life.

The only thing that worries me about future possible contacts is whether we will be able to win the war against other intelligent species.

Personally, I absolutely exclude the peaceful coexistence of mankind with other intelligent species. The risks of being destroyed by yourself are too great... This should not be allowed, there is too much at stake and it would be better to strike first.

I'm afraid not.

We don't even know yet if it is dimethyl sulfide, and even if it is, we won't be able to prove if it is as a result of biological life or an inorganic chemical process.

"What can you do for me and what can I do for you" attitude would be an immediate question from mankind. To make contact then abandon it would be difficult as we are too curious to uphold that.

yes, and some prefer Unbelief over actual facts and reality.

and react negatively when their belief is challenged. History demonstrates this quite well too.

and yet others react with Love to help the unbelievers find their way to the Truth or else.

That’s why I used the word “may”.

The Abrahamic religions are based on the premise that we are it. That earth is the only place jahweh made life.
Plenty of Christians (including the Pope) believe extraterrestrial life is possible. Plenty of Jews do too. Not sure about Muslims. And the Mormon religion, if you consider that to be Abrahamic, doctrinally believes in extraterrestrials. I don't think there are very many denominations that flat-out say there's no life anywhere else.

That’s why I used the word “may”.

Which is wrong since we can't prove that the chemical, if it even is that chemical, is caused by living organisms. So the status of earth as the only known planet to harbour life is not going to be about to change.

No - it's just the opposite. So far, actual facts and reality dictate unbelief, and have done so more and more, every decade for the past 250 years. Everything from Astrophysics to Zoology has long ago laid waste to the creation children's tales told in your comic book. In fact and reality, just this millennium alone, the science of Genetic Genealogy has totally obliterated any silly notions you might have about being descended from Noah, let alone Adam and Eve, as neither ever happened. The more mankind learns, the less your book bears any resemblance to reality at all. You should really try to keep up.

It is you who has chosen "belief" over actual facts and reality, which is fine as you are entitled to believe anything you wish. I hope the Easter Bunny was good to you this year.
and yet others react with Love to help the unbelievers find their way to the Truth or else.
Or else ... what?
Nothing.
in the end, History will demonstrate this quite well too.
History has already demonstrated "actual facts and reality", thoroughly eclipsing dozens of overwrought superstitions in your comic book. Don't get left behind.
:)
