Former Clinton pollster Mark Penn said Wednesday that Democrats are struggling politically because Americans perceive them as hyper-partisan and extreme on certain policies.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer told CNN in an April 27 interview that his party is “totally united in focusing on [President Donald] Trump.” After Fox Business host Maria Bartiromo played a clip of the interview on “Mornings with Maria,” Penn said that Schumer exemplifies how the party is viewed as “purely partisan” and unwilling to work with Trump to achieve progress for Americans.

“Chuck Schumer is one of the least popular politicians here in the country. I think he’s seen as really these days as close to a partisan hack rather than somebody who’s trying to solve the problems of the country,” Penn said. “And I think that’s the problem with the Democrats now. They’re seen as purely partisan, but off the deep end on some policy issues, not trying to be constructive, not listening to the will of the people to try to get things done together with the president.

March polling by NBC News and CNN/SSRS showed Democrats with record low popularity ratings — 27% and 29%, respectively.

Despite the public’s dissatisfaction, Schumer said on “Morning Joe” in March that his party’s “job” is to hurt Trump’s popularity, and that he and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries were aligned on an attack strategy.

Comment:
The Democrats believe that if they turn their hate up to 11 that that will work.
They are using their usual hate and fear smear tactics, but it's not working anymore.
They are defending mass illegal immigration crimes because they are on a mission to rebuild their shrinking voter base.
Remember what they said "no one is above the law"....well except for millions of illegal immigrants
They have put their greed for power above the sovereignty of our country

As has been the case for every President, Democrat or Republican, since the beginnings of this nation.
I would admit though the disaster that is this Trump regime probably heightens the discourse.

Not to present an alternative policy, but to smear the President. Let's promote men in womens' sports, advocate for teens having sex changes without parental knowledge of consent. Let's spend billions on trans gender functions in foreign countries, despite that a very tiny minority America agree. Democrats have truly lost their minds.

Americans perceive them as hyper-partisan and extreme on certain policies. Hell, they are extreme and they are hyper-partisan.

purely partisan” and unwilling to work with Trump to achieve progress for Americans.

Didn't this start, with great success for the GOP under Obama?
Wasn't it the Dems who joined the GOP to keep the government open just last month after years of shut downs by the GOP?

YES to both is the correct ansewer.

I disagree that the dems should have that as their "job". However, they SHOULD be against any of "MAGA's poor policies and actions, which number many..............few rational people can say that Trump is good for America

Ho hum. Seriously, ho hum. The Republicans do the same. It's not like they didn't do everything they could to bring down Biden's popularity, oh no, not much. BUT NOW because the Democrats want to do it to Trump, the hurt feelings of Trumpers comes out and we get moaning and groaning. Meanwhile, where do Righties get their talking points? Take a guess......
  • Overall, we rate the Tampa Free Press Right Biased based on editorial positions that consistently favor a conservative perspective. We also rate them Mixed for factual reporting due to a failed fact check and examples of the publication of false or misleading information.
Meanwhile we have our resident pro at whataboutism going off on some sort of tangent:
Let's promote men in womens' sports, advocate for teens having sex changes without parental knowledge of consent. Let's spend billions on trans gender functions in foreign countries
Yeesh!

So let me take a wild guess here, the OP doesn't like the Democrats? So stories like this will tickle the fancy of a particular demographic but will mean.......................... Ho hum to the rest of us.

Trump is a clever con man, carnival barker, and snake oil salesman. He knows how to talk to gullible and impressionable people and rip them off and sell them all sorts of weird things which eventually hurt them- often badly. Breaking that spell would be a good thing for America.

Pretty standard.

I agree. But, and there’s always a “but,” tech’s rise, bringing social media along with 24/7 news, has heightened the animosity. Everybody has something to say, and seemingly everybody publishes it somewhere - like we do here. Animosity and all.

Aww, point to where it hurts!

To be brutally honest we need neither Schumer or Jefferies to harm Trump's popularity, Trump is amazingly successful at doing that to himself. Despite the low approvals for Democrats that is no reason for them to be quiet while Trump continues to wreck the economy, our trade, and our fiscal position. Including a few Constitutionally questionable actions.

Once we do see a recession and real supply side faults, they'll pull for Democrats even if they still dislike them. Just like Trump did in 2024 going after Democrats and turning a few votes.

Just spare us the nonsense and the tears that 2026 will not be interesting because of today's stats on popularity. All of them.

You got Transgender Derangement Syndrome.

The only things that the Democrats are really good at are lying and stealing and hating.

Penn is attempting to give the Demo's some wise advice.
Schumer can't win on the issues so he is just cranking up the hate even higher.

Mark Penn is a fossil who hasn't been relevant to the Democratic since he lost the 2008 primary for Hillary Clinton.

You are welcome to follow his advice - but we'll pass.

Politician says it's a politician's job to do politician stuff and a politician agrees with him.

Fasci-freaking-nating. Not.

Schumer said the Democrat's “job” is to hurt Trump’s popularity, and Hakeem Jeffries agrees

Well, it is; but not by doing underhanded things. The Dems need to get their act together, and come up with issue solving agendas that appeals to the voters; that in of itself would hurt Trumps popularity.

Only Trump can hurt or help his popularity. Schumer and Jeffries probably can harden those who are anti-Trump but can’t budge those who are pro-Trump. The question then is how about those who are neither pro nor anti-Trump. Probably 20% or less of all Americans. The other 80% or so are avid, harden pro or anti-Trump. No changing their minds. With this latter 20% it will be Trump’s policies which affect them that will change their minds from support to opposition or vice versa. Many in this latter group voted for Trump because they felt they were better of personally 4 years ago than they were under Biden. These folks will either continue to support Trump if he can fix inflation and rising prices or they turn on him as they did Biden. Looking at Trump’s overall job performance, his approval dropping from 50% when he first took office down to 45% today, this latter group is deciding Trump hasn’t fix the problem they elected him to do. Trump is losing popularity by being Trump using a ton of EO’s to placate his base while ignoring why he was elected in the first place.
