School shoots itself in the foot..

On a serious note as a non British I find school dress code and school uniforms a bit strange.

it works. British schools can quickly reflect class and wealth if you let kids wear anything. everyone having the same uniform means poor kids can be the same as rich kids.
on the sportsfeild though, the poor kids wear sports shoes from the local supermarket and the rich kids wear top-of-the-range Nikes etc.
Uniforms are democratising.

Never understood the school uniform thing. What other benefit is it suppose to grant besides the obvious indoctrination and brainwashing?

if your parents earn £15K a year, you look the same as the kid whose parents earn £50K a year.

wealthier parents send their kids to public school though.

I don't understand the parents who let their kid show up to school in pajamas and a blanket or a crop top and short shorts.

that's almost neglect.

Maybe for the reporters, the story carries bigger weight than the middle of the road kid that gets 5's and 6's.
or the audience gets more outraged when it's a high achiever?

not surprised, the idiot who did that was asking for such responses.

exactly.

Wondering what you mean with the "idiot ask for it". Do you mean the school? That it doesn't seem clear what the reason for the ban was. Also a country is heading the wrong way if a single school can't enforce dresscode one heritage day without fearing it becomes a national story and they receive bomb threats.

Also if "censoring students heritage" is so bad when students should also be allowed to wear for example fotball kits or at least other fotball related cloths.

As you said students can find other ways to show the parents wealth and single out students. So the long term solution should be more equal societies with good and inclusive school for all students.

While yes school uniforms cab be a band aid. The question is how much they cost and if parents have to pay for themselves. That poor parents might not afford to buy enough new uniforms as the kid grows and wear out the uniforms.

Its a racket. My daughter just spent 600 quid kitting out our grandson for his first year in school. Why does a 5 year old need to wear something with the school crest on it ?

Why is it always a Straight A Student that seems to get picked on in these stories?

.
They're smarter than administrators.

A schoolgirl was put into isolation and pulled from lessons after wearing a Union Flag dress to mark her
British heritage on school culture day.
Courtney Wright, 12, a straight-A student, turned up to class in a Spice Girls-style dress and wrote a piece
about British history and traditions to mark the occasions.
In a permission letter sent to parents, it (Bilton School) said the day was "designed to promote inclusion,

understanding, and appreciation of different backgrounds, traditions and heritages".

You have to wonder if the school did this deliberately to drum up anger on the populist supporting UK websites and news shows like GBNews or someone at the school was genuinely stupid enough to invite kids to celebrate their heritage and then shame the kids who wanted to celebrate their English or Welsh history.

Words fail me.
All school officials involved in this need to be terminated.

The red corner cross arms are offset, making the white band wider on top on the left or staff side. Her dress has the narrow band on top.
Yes, I can see how that would be a problem. 🙄

Absolute rubbish. I wore school uniforms for ten years. Some kids wore crisp, clean uniforms with pressed shirts and creased pants. Other kids wore old worn uniforms. Wrinkled shirts. Ties too short for them. You could tell whose parents cared, and you could tell whose parents had money. This idea that uniforms make kids clothes the same is stupid. It doesn't work in the real world and I speak from experience.

We were given uniform lusts when I went to big school. The only interering thing was it specified geen knickers for the girls. I doubt any teachers checked but it was a challenge for us lads.

I can confirm that most of the girls I knew broke the uniform rules.

How much debate about it is in the UK? That there should be much more public outcry over five year olds being forced to wear school uniforms than pop dresses being banned on heritage day.

Kids should be able to be out and play during their time at school. With school uniforms don't seeming to be that durable and fitting for the different types of weather. It is also a lot of money for parents, especially since they also have to buy non-school clothes.

The main issue seems to be having to buy from approved suppliers. They ramp up the costs and the school gets a cut as well.
My daughter has now joined a group where they swap clothing to keep costs down. They have also found a printer who can embroider the badges and stick it on generic gear.
But its still a racket.
