(CNN)Families of children killed at the mass shooting andy Hook Elementary School in Connecticut have filed lawsuits against the estate of the shooter's mother, saying Nancy Lanza was careless and negligent in leaving a Bushmaster AR-15 rifle unsecured in her home.
Adam Lanza, 20, used the assault rifle to kill 20 first-grade students and six adults in Newtown on December 14, 2012.
The younger Lanza was mentally unstable and used his mother's Bushmaster to kill her before he went on the rampage at the school, and then killed himself.
At least eight lawsuits have been filed in Connecticut courts since January on behalf of relatives of 16 people killed in the massacre -- four adults and 12 children. Court documents also list two people who suffered serious injuries.
There needs to be consequences if there is to be responsibility. Anything less is a sham.
I hope they take all of her estate to warn others of the dangers of unsecured guns. There needs to be consequences if there is to be responsibility. Anything less is a sham.

A friend of Nancy Lanza, who had done contracting work for her, was last in the home eight months ago and remembers seeing a lock box in the basement where Lanza kept her guns.

So I take it that Connecticut is NOT one of those states where a Republican legislature has basically passed some laws providing special legal immunities and protections for gun companies and sellers so they cannot be sued as other companies may be sued?

I can't understand in the least what these families have gone through.
That being said, I also see no reasonable theory as to what suing Mrs. Lanza's estate will accomplish.
Other than to make the lawyers richer.
I don't understand this course of action at all.
3 years on, these people are in the "how can I profit from my child's death?" stage of grief. Arseholes.

So you want to steal the wealth of a murder victim because "meh feels bro".
This is why we need loser pay laws.

I am going to go out on a limb here and guess that you oppose this same sort 'warning' when it comes to capital punishment. THAT somehow isn't a deterrent but a lawsuit is...I hope they take all of her estate to warn others of the dangers of unsecured guns. There needs to be consequences if there is to be responsibility. Anything less is a sham.
If a guy buys a Chevy Suburban, and then plows it through a crowd of people on a city corner killing a dozen or more people in the process, should the families of the deceased be able to sue Chevrolet????
This country needs massive tort reform, the type where you sue and lose you pay the court costs to those you sue. The type where damages are capped to reasonable levels and where lawsuits like this get tossed on principle.
Protection from frivolous lawsuits and crooked lawyers is a good thing.
It is all about the money.

We live in the USA. What else would you expect other than a concern about money? That is a very important part of our culture.
Not when it is driven by greed.
