Russia suspected of jamming GPS on plane carrying Ursula von der Leyen

Aircraft with European Commission president onboard reportedly forced to circle Bulgarian airport for an hour

Russia is believed to have jammed the satellite signal of a plane carrying the European Commission president, Ursula von der Leyen, over Bulgaria, reportedly forcing it to circle an airport for an hour.

Von der Leyen was travelling to Plovdiv on Sunday when her charter plane lost satellite navigation aids, delaying its arrival in the central Bulgarian city.

The commission deputy spokesperson Arianna Podestà confirmed the incident. "We have received information from the Bulgarian authorities that they suspect this was due to blatant interference by Russia. Of course, we are aware and used to … the threats and intimidations that are a regular component of Russia's hostile behaviour," she said.
Interference with satellite navigation has become increasingly common in airspace near Russia and it is unclear whether von der Leyen was deliberately targeted. Asked about this point, Podestà said: "The question is best asked to the Russians."

Major airports use a variety of tools to navigate and land if GPS is not working, including radio navigation, which is reliable.

The incident was first reported by the Financial Times, which said von der Leyen's plane circled Plovdiv airport for an hour.

If true, that's an ACT OF WAR.

Russia needs to be punished accordingly.

Stick to being melodramatic about America's past wrongs.
Oh, so this wasn’t you?
Spree killers don't stop until someone else stops them.

Seal Team 6. Moscow. Middle of the night.

Easy peasy.
I’m trying to figure out where the “logic” is, since you apparently think sending US troops on a suicide mission to try and kill a world leader is okay, but this is an “act of war”.

Putzin started this war.

Seal Team 6 would finish it.

😂

The SEALs wouldn’t even get close.

Seriously, how do you fantasize they’d even get to Moscow to begin with, much less assault one of the most heavily fortified places in the country?

Ahh, Russia up to their usual shenanigans.

Was Russia using a ship to do this?

Otherwise it would be a 600 mile radius of GPS being blocked.

It didn't state if Turkey Moldova etc also had their GPS signals jammed.

I doubt Russia has the technology to block it to a specific plane

Like Putin was punished for blowing up the plane of Yevgeny Prigozhin, the mercenary Wagner Group leader? That's what he gets for launching a short-lived rebellion against the Russian military leadership.

….yeah, if you carry out a coup and lose, you are going to face consequences for it in a country with an actual brain(unlike the U.S.)

I see the RIC spokesman has arrived.

Yeah, who needs courts and judges? Bah.

The U.S. is literally sanctioning the International Criminal Court. It has a law on the books authorizing the president to take “any means necessary” to rescue American war criminals being held at The Hague.

America has been the one saying that… for decades.

That's a great question. Seems like it would impact many planes, not just this one. Unless it was something on the aircraft itself.

I would hope that any plane and crew flying the leader of a country would have multiple means of navigation available. What do they plan to do when (not if) a piece of equipment fails? Isn't lesson 1 to 'look out the darn window!'?

Given the city she was going to was in South Central bulgaria, any jamming would have hit Romania, Ukraine, and likely turkey if done from Crimea. If done from a ship on the coast it would have hit Romania, Greece and Turkey. With I am sure dozens of flights per day in the region all that is mentioned is that her plane was effected. I looked for other information and only reports of her plane being effected was found.

If Russia can jam the GPS of one plane a minimum of 300 miles away, I would be very surprised. Given the misinformation going on, I expect the plane had a malfunction and not jammed

I agree that's far more likely. It could have even been something simple - like a bad antenna connection. It happens.

And certainly, it's a bad pilot that would rely solely on GPS for navigation.
